PartI.
As a black woman, I am fully able to identify with and emphatically relate to issues
affecting our overall health. In addition, also factoring in the southern hospitality
aspects andexpectationsof living in the south, manypreventable diseasesplagueour
community. According to 2014 U.S. Census data, just shy of 43% of the metro
Birmingham Alabama population is black, with more than half of this number being
females (Williams, 2015).Manyof these womenare headsof their households, withat
least 2 children and despite working fulltime, are insufficiently able to fully provide
stablefinancialsupportfortheirfamilies.Thefoodthatisconsumedisoftennotthebest
quality, due to the high cost of groceries, as they have to considerallthe otherbasic
needs of life which must be also be addressed. The United States has the highest
percentage of obese peoplein theworld.Alabama,with24.5percentofadultsobese,is
amongthe top seven statesin the nation.Alabamahas an additional37.2percentwho
are overweight(Obesity andOverweightinAlabama,2003).Withthesefactsinmind,it
is imperative that a program which focuses on taking offensive actions to keepOnes
healthand/or regain and keepthe healthvitaltoafulland abundantlife.Withinstances
of obesity and overweightness, other issues evolve, including, but not limited to
diabetes,multiplecasesofheartdiseaseandcertaincancers.
Themissionof
Eating for Lifeis simple, to share thesimpletruthsabout nutritionand
how the food we eat helpsourbodies bethe best they can be, by nourishing our cells
sufficiently.
Eating for Life
:Properlycombinedandwelltimeeatingprinciples
,seeksto

share vital informationabouttheimportance forproper food combininganditsresulting

effectsonhealthandqualityoflife(Williams,2015).
The main foundational goals of the program are educational: 1. to aggressivelyteach
those whose health is deteriorating, how to quickly correct the issue 2. to share
offensive strategies for those whose health is good, to continue keeping it thus and
improvingitmore.

The main stakeholders of the program are the participants themselves. Because it is
their health that is on the line, they will be the most interested in the success of the
programand their resultingefforts. One persons health isnotsingularly focused. Each
individualis a partofmanyunitswhichdependedupontheirstronglinkbeingactivein
the chain. For example, families are composed of individuals. When one individual in
the family unit is broken, another member must also break chainin order tocarefor
them. That action has a ripple effect. Both (or more) individuals are thus not able to
contribute elsewhere atthetime, for examplework orschoolandtheirlackofpresence
must be otherwise compensated, more so in a workrelated, rather than educational
environment. That/those individuals employers now are at a disadvantage: 1. no
present contributory worker 2. potentially rising costs of healthcare due to illness of a
group member. The ripples can potentially reach even farther, as far as affecting the
livelihoods of strangers, as they pay taxes which could potentially be used to support
unhealthy individuals. Each human being hasamoral obligationand responsibility to
maintain and/or regain (as soon as possible) their health, inorder to be a positive and
contributorymemberofsociety.

With the potential of a dramatic and large impact for such a small budget, many
potential funding opportunities are available to
Eating for Life.
The Department of
Health and HumanServicesmaintains a Preventionand Public Health FundReporting
Database (2015) of available funding opportunities for programs such as ours.
Regrettably, there arenopresent funds availablehowever,beingdiligenttowatchthe

Because of the longterm and positive effects of
Eating for Life,
because everyone
must eat to live, its sustainability and duplication have high probability of thriving.
Sharing the documentation of successes and corrections made in our Birmingham

SkyHighWellnessInitiative(SHWI)
Although the term workplace wellness is relatively new, the focus of wellness in the
workplace has been of concern for decades, especially since the publication of
The
Jungle by Upton Sinclair in early 1906, which exposed the deplorable conditions of
working conditions in many industrialized areas.
A workplace health program is a
health promotion activity or organizationwide policy designed to support healthy
behaviors and improve healthoutcomes whileatwork(WellnessatWork,CDC,2015).

TheSkyHigh Wellness Initiative(SHWI) will seek tobuild on the foundationsofthese4
pillarsto increasethelikelihoodofsuccessfor aviationcrew members. Becauseof the
unique and often predictable schedules of aviation professionals, aninvestment in the
completehealth ofthose chargedwithprovidingsafetransportationtosomanyisvitally
important and wise on the part of airlines companies.Individually, each pilot and flight
attendantmust be sure toexercise what we always caution others todoeverytimewe
work:toputourownoxygenmasksonfirst.
There could be multiple reasons for flight delays and detours weather, mechanical
issues, illness of crew members or cabin guests, etc. Each of these issues andmore
can alter or completely change plans, depending on the course and needs of the
remainder of the day. No time, but more likely, no healthful options for food may be
present and the undercurrent of stress andpressure canmakeforanenvironmentwith
potentially negative health consequences. The necessity of proper nutrition and
wellness forflightcrewsisessentialtotheorganizationsandcommunitiesbeingserved,

The Mission of the SkyHigh Wellness Initiative (SHWI) is to be provided resources to

help flight crewsbemore proactive about their health, especially asisrelatedtoproper
nutrition. SHWI will provideideas andtipsforpreparingandbringingalonghealthyfood

purchase expensive junk, which is ineffective at providing proper nutrition, and thus
mental and physical strength to be at their peak for safe flying. The goals, objectives
and resulting recommended actions all work together to help flight crewsbethemost

A variety of mediums will be used to communicate with crews about SHWI and its
purposes. Due to the complex and diverse nature of our industry and the resulting
scheduling needs, it would prove impossible to get many people together for an in
person meeting. Assimilating the information through current company channels will
prove the best and mosteconomicaluseoftimeandresources.Becausewewoulduse
the existing channelsalready in place, it would almost completelyalleviatethe needfor
an extensive budget. The expenses I foresee presently would be for prizes and
incentives. Because the wellness of employees is a direct benefit and thus an
investment to our company, it is hopeful that utilization of current resources wouldbe
allowed and thus negate the need to request funding foradditional systems. Because
SHWI seeks to serve as a resource for wellness, wewillshareideas, strategies and
recommendations via electronic means: our current company intranet, internal social
media platform and direct, via poster, in crew rooms at every base of operation. The
company would see the benefit of being SHWIs benefactor and biggest supporter
because when crews are available, it proves direct impact on company financials.
Activity, which isproduced whencrewsmakeflights,produces increaseandprofitability
fortheoverallcorporation.

Because our goalis tobeaninformationalresource,theprocessforimplementationwill

not be cumbersome. Beingabletoutilizeexistingsystemsthatarealreadyreachingour
desired audience are readily available. Because human beings are more than merely
physical bodies, butspiritualbeings, functioningmentally and intellectually,we wantto
ensure that we are coveringthehealth ofthe wholebeing, for
total Wellness
.The first
steps will be to submit the request for support of SHWI to those whose decision will
influence our ability to be able to utilize business systems to share the information.A
proposal outlining the benefits already discussed, along with a plan to protect the
companysinvestments(intheirpeoplethecrews).

TheSkyHighWellnessInitiative
DearCorporateExecutives,

ourselves, but for all of us. In order for us (as crew members) to continue
functioning at our peaklevels, itis imperative that we do all wecan tokeep our

When the goals and objectives for the program are shared, the participation and
resulting effectswillbeimmediate.Crew memberswill behappy tohavereadyaccess

duplicable if the committee membersshouldrotateout of theirpositions. Theoutlineis
