A. Personal Statement
My name is Fan Liu, an international student from China. One of my personal goals has
always been to be a dentist since I was young. Though it may be a while before I reach that
goal, I have studied and gained experiences in the dental field. Personally, I really enjoy
having interactions between all the patients either healthy or sick. When I was little, I got sick
all the time that made me want to have a magical hand that could cure my pain and that of
others. My expectation for this program is to develop my critical thinking skills on dental
hygiene related subjects. I hope I can develop skills as a dental hygiene leader after this
program so that I can bring the dental hygiene education programing strategy back to my
country. I hope that one day I can be the one who can make a difference about dental
hygiene and oral health in China and have my own charity to help all the children in the
underdeveloped provinces.
My strength is that I am hard worker and I will not give-up no matter how hard it will be. I
believe my strength will definitely help me to achieve my goals in the future. I will keep
working hard and stay positive to achieve my goals. I would like to acquire the leadership
skills and teaching skills, as well, in this one-year program. Since I have become an adjunct
instructor at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, I believe I will have
a really good experience on teaching first year dental students that will definitely prepare me
in the teaching field. For my master program of dental hygiene, I really want to focus on
promoting dental hygiene and how cultural, educational, economic, and environmental
determinants of oral health and their relationship are to the systemic health and health
disparities.
