Volunteer Information & Guidelines

Thank you so much for requesting to volunteer with us, we couldn't support
vulnerable women the way we do without the generosity of individuals like yourself
we are very grateful for your willingness to help, in whatever capacity that is!

VISION: To see all women in East London provided with opportunities to leave their
vulnerable situations and be released into a positive future. We exist to give opportunities
and purpose to vulnerable women through training, employment and community. Luminary is
a welcoming and safe environment where women can grow holistically encouraging
ambition, restoration and second chances. We aim to empower and equip these women to
hope for a future, and give them the tools to obtain it. By investing in and releasing them to
realize their dreams we can break the generational cycles of abuse, prostitution, criminal
activity and poverty.

Our values:
We believe that all people have inherent value and potential no matter what their past or
current circumstances.
We believe in nurturing worth in people to release them into a positive
future, equipping them with the skills needed to achieve it.
We seek to create a safe and professional work environment where everyone
feels welcome a place where genuine community can be built and women
can support each other.
We believe in producing quality artisan products, which creatively represent who we are.
We seek to run a sustainable and viable business which invests its profits into
more opportunities for vulnerable women.

1. Kitchen Guidelines
The main volunteer roles are in the kitchen: baking, cleaning, preparing food & packaging.
We have a need for people of all abilities and there is a lot of training on the job. The
following instructions are for those volunteering in the kitchen:

1.1 Food Hygiene
Hair must be tied/pinned up or covered, no hanging strands.
Jewellery should be kept to a minimum and rings removed while in the kitchen working
with food.
Hand washing and drying with disposable towels is a regular part of our day especially
after: using our phones, touching our face, eating and working with raw eggs.
Aprons are a part of our working wardrobe. If you have an apron especially a full body
one please bring it.
Nails must be clean and short, no nail varnish may be worn.
Everyone in the kitchen must have signed a personal hygiene agreement.
All long term team members must complete a food hygiene Level 2 certification.
1.2 Food Preparation and Baking
Baking is very scientific so we may require you to be more precise or accurate with your
measuring than you ever would be in your home kitchen.

Handling baked products is a delicate business whether baked or unbaked. It helps to

keep this in mind because touching bread dough too often could cause it to collapse or
cookies to crumble.
Following instructions is a necessary part of the day. There will be someone to give you
direction and written recipes. Please ask questions if you need to clarify anything, no
question is too silly we prefer that to you giving it a go and getting a batch wrong!
While using the oven it is important to keep the doors shut and checking to a minimum to
provide an even bake and maintain a constant temperature.
When preparing foods that contain special dietary requirements we use a separate part of
the kitchen and avoid cross contamination at all costs. I.e. Gluten free brownies
Let us know if you have any food allergies/dietary requirements we should know about.
1.3 Passion
If there are certain tasks you enjoy or products you are interested in making that we offer
please let us know and if time allows we will plug you in. I.e. chopping food, or being involved
in the production of making bread. But please come prepared to do tasks that also arent your
favourite!
1.4 When in doubt - Wash dishes we make many products and this simple mundane
task is one of the biggest helps.

2. Location
We bake in Husk Coffee & Creative Space 649-651 Commercial Road, Limehouse,
London E14 7LW. The kitchen is through the cafe to the back, phone Abby on
07758888806 if you have any issues finding it or getting in.

If you have committed to come at a certain time please do aim to stick to that
commitment, or let Abby know if something comes up.

4. Other volunteer roles
4.1 At Luminary we find a creative use for most abilities / areas of expertise; if you have a
skill you would like to donate to Luminary you could either help with our internal operations,
fundraise, or you could run an expert workshop for our women on the training programme.

4.2 We have limited opportunities for directly supporting the vulnerable women we work with
in a mentoring capacity. If you are interested area in this we do require previous experience,
a 1 year commitment and a current DBS check.

Luminary Faith Policy

Luminary is a social enterprise designed to offer opportunities for women who have
experience social and economic disadvantage, to build a future for themselves and their
families.
We provide a safe and professional environment where women can grow holistically
encouraging ambition, restoration and second chances. We use baking as a tool to take
women on a journey to employability and entrepreneurship, equipping them with practical
and transferrable skills for the working world.
Luminary is a project of registered Charity; Kahaila, which runs a caf, a church, other
community projects, and has a Christian ethos. Many Luminary staff have a Christian faith
but it is not required in order to work or volunteer with us, or to benefit from our services. All
can find a place to belong in the Luminary family.
The Christian faith motivates the Luminary culture of going the extra mile for our
beneficiaries, believing in potential in everyone, showing love and compassion without
conditions, and loving our neighbour as ourselves.
Anyone looking to join the Luminary team, as staff or in a voluntary capacity, must be
sympathetic to our aims and objectives, looking to help drive the project forward in line with
our vision. It is advised that applicants be comfortable working within a faith-based
organisation, being respectful of faith views. The team will sometimes have a time of prayer
together but this can be used as a time of reflection, and attendance is not mandatory.
For our beneficiaries, we provide an inclusive service, with ideologies discussed when
initiated by the beneficiary, keeping in mind their vulnerability, respecting other world-views
and not passing judgement.
We recognise that spirituality is a part of the human make-up and seek to find opportunities
for women to navigate their own spiritual journey in community. However the services we
offer are non-discriminatory and beneficiaries are treated equally no matter what faith
background or interest in a faith journey they have.
If a woman would like us to pray for her or provide chaplaincy-style support, specific team
members are happy to offer and facilitate that. For these certain job roles, holding a Christian
faith is an occupational requirement and will be outlined in job descriptions.

Form 3 Conduct Agreement

We provide training, employment and supportive community to vulnerable women leaving various
difficult backgrounds. The women who come into our programmes are strong, resilient and have been
through a lot. They may have come from poverty, homelessness, the sex industry, trafficking,
domestic violence, sexual violence, prison, or being at risk of any of the above.

Language
It is crucial that we use terminology that empowers these women and releases them from stigma
We refer to the project as supporting vulnerable women as it relieves the need to go specifically into
their background, and enables them to put that in the past. However we recognise that this can be a
demeaning term and try to refer to them as coming from vulnerable situations, but being released
into a positive future. This kind of language enables us all to see their vulnerability as a past issue.

The women may have negatively experienced any of the following areas and hence please be
sensitive when referring to:

(NEVER MAKE INAPPRORIATE JOKES)

-
-
-
-
-

Homelessness
Prison
Crime
Prostitution
Trafficking

-
-
-
-

Domestic
Violence
Rape
Mental Health
Drugs

-
-
-
-

Death
Sexuality
Poverty
Faith / God

The terms Crazy or Prostitute or synonyms not to be used. We never want to label people with
negative connotations. Our aim is always to encourage and empower and we recognise that both
our words and our actions can have destructive effects when not carefully thought through. If you
would like training / advice on the best ways to refer to the above topics please contact Alice we
would much prefer you ask & we chat it through.

Behaviour
Please be understanding that many women may have a front due to negative life experiences,
difficulty trusting and meeting new people. Try not to be offended if they dont seem warm or they
display challenging behaviour, just continue to show that you love and value them regardless
remembering our values. Your behaviour should always be professional and appropriate, ensure
your clothing is suitable (not revealing or offensive), you keep mutual (not having favourites), you are
VERY careful with physical contact ensuring that they always initiate, and remembering that in
everything you do you are a positive role model.

Boundaries
While the women are training with us they will have Alices work number to contact, please do not
give our your personal details (contact or social media) in order to keep a professional relationship. If
you see the women outside of allocated Luminary time please let Alice know. Once the women
become colleagues in the bakery we re-define the boundaries, which will be clarified by Alice as and
when this occurs.

I agree to the above conduct and recognise that agree to represent Luminary positively in
interactions with the women, customers, suppliers, funders and the public.
