Primary prevention through application of research strategies is an essential concept in the care of children. In this
team discovery assignment, students will examine the Healthy People 2020 goal (NWS-10) Reduc[ing] the
proportion of children and adolescents who are considered obese. Each team will research and design a 10-20
minute PowerPoint presentation that supports the goal of the assigned topic area using the PICO format for
development of evidence based practice. The three team topics are:
NWS-10.1 Reduce the proportion of children aged 2 to 5 years who are considered obese
NWS-10.2 Reduce the proportion of children aged 6 to 11 years who are considered obese
NWS-10.3 Reduce the proportion of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years who are considered obese

Parents informed through statistical information about how Michigan and Jackson county rank in
comparison to the rest of the country. This is significant because sometimes people just dont
know by the numbers how much of a problem it really is.

Use of technology apps for helping parents and children actively engage in health management
Comments:
Why and how these tools are becoming more relevant in todays society for many reasons, cost,
convenience, lack of time to communicate etc.
Stressful boundary issues occur between children and parents related to technology use

Inform families about free, user friendly resources that promote healthy eating, track exercise and activity
levels and reduce screen time.
Comments:
Great use of technology resources to find ways to work with families in todays electronic generation. If
you cant beat em join em.
