Corundum

Made by: William Adair

The
chemical
formula

The chemical formula is AI2O3 or aluminum oxide

Corundum belongs to the non-silicitates group and
the oxides family
The oxides family is usually used for abrasives,
something that is used for grinding or polishing,
airplane parts, and paint

Corundum is used as an abrasive

The uses for

corundum

Corundum is used in sand paper, grinding wheels,

and floor polish
The other use for corundum is as a gemstone, being
sold in department stores and fancy jewelry markets

What types
of rocks
that
corundum is
found in

Corundum is found in ingenious rocks, where lava has

cooled and it leaves a wonderful rock in its place
Corundum is also found in metamorphic rocks, where
the rock has not only been modified by heat, but also
pressure and chemicals
Finally Corundum is found in sedementary rocks,
where sediments just gather together to form a rock

Corundum
location

Since it can be found in igneous rocks so wherever

theres a volcano, theres a chance you can find
traces of corundum in the area
You could find it underground, where the rock
metamorphosis occurs
You could also find it under oceans, rivers, and
underground, where theres so much pressure, a rock
forms

Corundum
location
continued

You can find gemstone corundum located in alluvial

deposits, and alluvial deposits are where a river
dumps out different materials and minerals
Alluvial deposits in Burma
Alluvial deposits in Cambodia
Alluvial deposits Sri Lanka

Corundum

Alluvial deposits in India

Alluvial deposits in Afghanistan
Alluvial deposits in Montana

Natural corundum is formed whenever lava forms into

a rock, then cools

Formation
of
Corundum

Natural corundum is also formed deep underground

as a metamorphic rock, being subject to extreme heat
and pressure, along with a chemical change
Finally, natural corundum is formed whenever
sediments gather together to form corundum.
Gemstone corundum is formed whenever colorless
(pure) corundum has a trace of some metals
For example, for a ruby, you would have pure
corundum with a trace of chromium

Color- for natural corundum its gray to brown, but for

the gems you could have any color you wanted

Properties
of
Corundum

Luster- glassy
Hardness- 9 on the Mohs scale, just under diamond
Cleavage- doesnt have any
Streak- colorless
Density- 4.02 g/cm cubed
Shape- hexagonal
