By: Ginger Hall

Facts
• Agamemnon became the king of
Mycenae (or Argos), after his
uncle Thyestes.
• He led the Greek forces when
they conquered Troy in the
Trojan War.
Family Tree
Agamemnons parents are Arteus
and Aerope. He has one brother
named Menelaus. He married
Clytemnestra and had three
children: Electra, Iphigenia, and
Orestes. He has one grandson
Pelops.
Trogan War
• Agamemnon led the Greek forces to
conquer Troy. Before they sailed from
Aulis, they had to face the wrath of
the goddess Artemis. Artemis was
upset because she knew several men
were going to die during the war. She
used her powers to create strong
winds to prevent the army from
sailing to Troy.
Artemis agreed to let the
men go on with their journey
as long as Agamemnon
sacrificed his daughter,
Iphigenia. Eventually, he
sacrificed his daughter.
Iphigenias death satisfied
Artemis so she decided to let
the men sail to Troy.
Clytemnestra
Before Clytemnestra married
Agamemnon, she was married to
Tantalus. Tantalus was killed by
Agamemnon, who was his second
cousin, so he could marry
Clytemnestra.
Return to Greece
When Agamemnon came back from
the war, he brought along a
concubine, Cassandra. His wife,
Clytemnestra, had an affair with
Aegisthus. Clymnestra had been
waiting for Agamemnon to return
from Troy for ten years. Once he
had returned, she killed him.
• She killed him for two
reasons. She was mad about
the sacrifice of their
daughter, Iphigenia, and
she was jealous of
Cassandra.
