Informal Greetings

Greetings are used to say hello in English. When its the first time you are meeting
someone in an informal situation you say Hi or Hello.

Everyday Greetings
Good morning (first thing in the morning).
Good afternoon (after lunch -from 12:00 p.m until 5:00 P.M)
Good evening (during sunset or after 5:00 p.m).
Good night (when you are leaving after 7:00 p.m and going to bed).

After the Greeting


After you greet someone, it is common to ask "how are you? .It is just a polite question
and you dont need to answer with much detail.
More common informal ways to ask, How are you ?:
How are you doing?
Hows it going?
Hey, hows it going?
How are things going?
What's up? (very informal)
What's new?( very informal)

Responses to the how are you? questions


Fine / Im fine.(most common way to respond to "how are you?").
Pretty good - (almost the same as Im fine).
Good (Another common way to respond).
OK (between "fine" and "not so good.")
Not bad (If you just feeling OK or so-so).
Not so good / not so well ( when you are not feeling good or well or have problems)
Note: nothing and nothing much can only be used to answer what's up?" and "what's
new?". It means

Saying goodbye:
When we are departing from a place we say Goodbye or just bye. It is polite to say:
Have a good morning.
Have a good day.
Have good afternoon.
Have a good night.
If you are likely to see the person again later that day, or when you have plans to see each
other again you can also say:
See you late.
Ill see you later.
See you soon.
Catch you later.
