Week 4

It was the fourth week in teaching practice, as usual I met my MST and
students. During my observation, I noticed that the teacher used brilliant
ideas to get students engaged and motivated to learn. First of all, she
combined learning through playing, she used online games and acting. This
made all students participated and understand the lesson well. I liked this
strategy because students will enjoy and attract them to the lesson.
According to Piaget and Vygotsky, who believed that playing is essential for a
childs development and for learning "learning takes place when children
play" (Moony, 2000). Furthermore, she used powerful technique to boost
students self-esteem and make them responsible which is assigned group
leaders and bookkeepers and she changed that every week. This made
students responsible about their members of the group, cooperate among
each other and learn from each other. As a result, this will play a very
important role to enhance their learning because they will get a rich
opportunity to share their ideas, talk and discuss with their groups. Finally,
each week the teacher choose a "start of the week" and will give he/she
certificates. She will choose the star of the week ,according to standards
such as, excellent behaviors, working hard and respecting friends. This
strategy made students try to do excellent behavior and working hard.
According to skinner who believed that behavior cause by environment this
means that teacher can exchange the bad behavior to good behavior. During
my teaching in Language Art, while I was walking around to monitor
students, I noticed that one boy was facing problems in reading. So, I
supported this boy by using both approaches top- down and bottom-up
approaches because they play a very important role to support students in
reading "The best readers in any language are those who use interactive
reading, which integrates elements of both bottom-up and top-down
reading." (Nunan, 20016-2016). While reading with him, he read some
sentences without attempting to break the word into parts, especially the
high frequency words, this follow top down approaches. Whereas, he used
bottom up approaches when he was unable to read words such as
"invention", I told him to use a decoding strategy which is breaking the words
into syllables. Then he tried to break the words and said the word perfectly.
And to make sure that he mastered this skill, I gave him another word and he
decoded perfectly. This made me satisfied and proud of myself to be able to
guide and scaffold this boy. Also, during my teaching, I faced a problem to
control one boy called "Abdurrahman", he was unable to sit in his chair and
moved a lot, I tried to find techniques to be able to address that. So, I used

several techniques to support him such as, told Abdurrahman that if you sit
5 minutes on your seat and do the activity, you will have a chance to go out
for a walk. In addition, when he followed and responded to that I praised
him by using different strategies such as, giving him stickers, verbal
feedback for example, great, fantastic. Finally, I designed activities that
interested Abdurrahman, which made him enthusiastic to do it and sat on
his seat. It was fabulous week, I learned a great information and knowledge
which will help me to become a perfect teacher and I am waiting for next
week.
