Following my course work in Interventions and

considering my previous professional experience as
well as my Field Experience, I am highly effective and
competent in advising and helping. Particularly, I am
able to facilitate group decision making and manage
conflict. I am also keenly aware of group dynamics,
mental health signals and concerns, and consult
appropriately.
With my current professional experience in
combination with my knowledge acquisition in
Assessment, Evaluation and Research, I am confident
in my ability to differentiate between terminology as
well as methods used in the assessment process. Ive
also had experience with constructing data collection
instruments and contributed to a culture of
assessment at Western Michigan University by taking
part in an ongoing CAS Standards review.
Coursework such as Diversity and Equity, White
Privilege, and Global Perspectives has afforded me
significant knowledge regarding diversity, equity, and
inclusion. As a student affairs professional, I have not
only assessed and addressed my own personal beliefs
and biases, but I have also contributed to the
integration of cultural awareness programs and
facilitated others learning and practice of social justice
concepts, such as presenting on white privilege and
race at the Diversity and Leadership Institute.
In addition to discussion in class, Ive gained vast
experience in actively engaging and supporting ethical
practices within my work environment. Additionally, I
support and implement ethical practices into my own
work with students.
I have obtained depth in my understanding and
exploration of historical implications in student affairs
and higher education. Ive defined my personal values
in accordance with the long-standing values of the

practice.
In my graduate assistantship and Capstone
experiences, Ive had the opportunity to recruit,
evaluate, interview, and hire a variety of staff. While
following policies and procedures, Ive also
implemented a rubric evaluation to increase quality of
the hiring process.
Currently, Im able to define and explain differences in
terminology used in higher education law. However, as
I am currently enrolled in Higher Education Law, it is a
continuing process to develop my understanding of
federal and state law as well as legal theories.
From previous professional experience to my current
graduate assistantship, I am advanced in my
understanding of not only my own personal values and
leadership style, but also adept in leading, motivating,
and facilitating effective group work, collaboration
initiatives and team building efforts.
With consideration to my ongoing personal and
professional development, I am also able to critique
myself and others in areas of personal foundations.
Active reflection and development toward individual
self-excellence are key strategies I undergo on a
consistent basis.
While my understanding and utilization of multiple
theories is constructive, I still seek to advance my
ability to contribute to the development of theories
and my ability to analyze, critique, and contribute to
explaining theories to broad audiences.

Part 2. Reflection.
In the majority of my professional competencies, I have moved from the beginning stages
of development to either intermediate or advanced levels of understanding. It is evident that I
have become more advanced in areas that I have experience in both coursework as well as
complimentary professional work. I am distinguishably more effective in the areas of
Leadership, Personal Foundations, and Advising and Helping, particularly with helping skills.
This aligns with my current role as a graduate assistant in the Student Activities and Leadership
Programs (SALP) office as I consistently work one-on-one with students, develop leadership
programs, and reassess personal and professional foundations. While my current competencies
are reflective of my experience, I need to continue building my foundations in Student Learning
and Development to create meaningful and intentional learning outcomes as well as continually
advance my knowledge within Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as higher education moves
toward becoming a more culturally sensitive environment.
