Practice Summary Paper

NURS 403- Career Pathway- Expand Horizons

Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to guide you through a process of self-reflection
and self-evaluation to discover the scope of your personal and professional development
while enrolled in the RN> BSN nursing program at Old Dominion University.
Approach to Assignment
This assignment required me to reflect on my educational journey while enrolled
in Old Dominion Universitys RN > BSN nursing program. As I assembled all my
completed coursework I realized how much I have learned and how the program has
broadened my outlook of the nursing profession. Upon completion of the practice
summary paper, I could see the progress I have made throughout the program in attaining
my educational goals for the BSN program.
Reason for Inclusion
This paper is an accurate depiction of the steps taken to achieve all eight program
outcomes for the RN > BSN nursing program.
Critical Thinking

Uses decision-making skills in making clinical or professional judgments

My decision-making skills were used to make a clinical judgment that would best
meet the needs of my patient. During a home visit I suspected there was a case of
domestic violence upon observation and assessment of a patient. I discussed my findings
with my supervisor, and an immediate follow-up visit to the patients house was

scheduled. A screening form was utilized, documentation was done of findings, and the
social worker and physician were notified.

Engages in creative problem solving

One of my patients, who had a suprapubic catheter, frequently experienced
blockage of his catheter. Even though the patient and his wife were aware that he
should consume lemon-based fluids to reduce blockage, consistency with
consumption was a problem. Additional patient and caregiver education was done
on the need to increase intake of lemon-based fluids. Suggestion was made to the
wife to include in her grocery list app lemon-based fluids and to set a daily alarm
to specifically drink lemon-based fluids.

Nursing Practice

Implements traditional nursing care practices as appropriate to provide holistic

health care to diverse populations across the lifespan
In a discussion board assignment I discussed how I used holistic care in
my nursing practice. A middle-aged patient, who was a paraplegic, had been
exhibiting signs of depression. He had various factors contributing to his
depressive state. The factors included: recent change in health status,
unemployment, and marital problems. The holistic care I thought would be most
beneficial to this patient was empathetic listening skills and therapeutic touch.

Establishes and/or utilizes outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of care

JJ symptom management case study was an assignment that required me
to evaluate the plan of care and add suggestions where needed for a patient
diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. This patient was new to

receiving palliative care. The plan of care was designed to effectively manage
JJs disease process and evaluate the effectiveness of care provided.
Communication

Produces clear, accurate, and relevant writing using correct grammar, spelling
and punctuation
Provided graded rubric, where I was able to obtain all points possible for
grammar.

Adapts communication methods to patients with special needs

A weekly assessment was to be completed on an avatar for the Health
Assessment class. One of the avatars I had to adapt my interviewing method for
was a 5-year-old patient. The patients father was present at the clinic visit and
able to assist with answering questions to complete my assessment of the patient.

Teaching

Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures

and technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical
interventions
An elderly patient had expressed anxiety about an upcoming Computed
Tomography (CT) procedure. To help allay his concerns I provided education
about his upcoming procedure and what to expect. Teaching involved
information on CT scanner not being a tunnel, low exposure to radiation, and
procedure is relatively painless. The patient stated that he felt more comfortable
about having the procedure after the teaching session was completed.

Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance ones

own knowledge base

To gain new knowledge and perspective on the nursing profession I

maintain an online journal subscription, belong to a nursing group on Facebook,
and read nursing blogs. The insight and knowledge I gain, enhances my nursing
practice. Keeping abreast of recent research also ensures that I am using
evidence-based best practice in my clinical practice.

Evaluates the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities for use in a
variety of settings with diverse populations.
My son belongs to the Cub Scouts, and to earn one of their badges they
had to complete a learning session on choking. I provided the education on signs
of someone choking and demonstrated how to assist a choking victim. To
evaluate understanding of education provided Cub Scout members were required
to verbalize and demonstrate understanding of material learned.

Research

Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports

of nursing research.
A discussion board assignment required critique of a research study and
identifying components of the research process. The components of the research
process included: purpose, methods, variables, results, interpretations,
recommendations, and a conclusion. Another assignment, the literature review
table assignment required reviewing research articles that pertained to a chosen
research topic. The goal of the assignment was to be able to answer if the
reviewed articles were relevant to the subject matter being researched, evidence

based, and date of research study.

Shares research findings with colleagues

The assignment Josies story provided me with insight into the impact of our
healthcare system from a patients perspective. I was so moved when I read this
story; that I shared the knowledge I had gained with my coworkers. My reason
for doing so is that, I believe we can institute changes where needed in the
healthcare field by sharing new information with each other.
Leadership

Assumes a leadership role withins ones scope of practice as a designer, manager,

and coordinator of healthcare to meet the special needs of a vulnerable
populations in a variety of practice settings
Some of my church members had expressed the need to adopt a healthier

lifestyle and lose weight. Several members stated the need to be more proactive
about their health now that they were middle aged. I formed a walking group to meet
twice a week and facilitated discussion sessions on healthier eating. Weight loss and
healthy eating habit goals were set and evaluated after six months.

Initiates community partnerships to establish health promotion goals and

implements strategies to meet those goals
The Health Planning Project Proposal involved identifying a health issue of a

specific community and developing strategies to help resolve the health problem.
Our group identified Lyme disease as being a significant health problem in Loudoun
County, Virginia. A proposal was prepared and strategies proposed to reduce the
incidences of Lyme disease among Loudoun County residences.

Delegates and supervises the nursing care given by others while retaining the
accountability for the quality of care given to the patient

I am one of the nurses assigned to orienting newly hired nurses and home health
aides to home health care. A portion of orientation involves providing the nurse or
home health aide with a patient assignment and then supervising to make sure quality
of care is not compromised. Any issues or concerns on delivery of care are promptly
addressed and corrected.
Professionalism

Applies an ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to clinical

situations that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics and advocacy for
patient well-being and preferences
The end of life assignment was an example of how I incorporated an ethical

framework and legal guidelines in a clinical practice scenario to guide nursing care.
The American Nurses Association were used as guidelines to demonstrate how ethical
decision making strategies were formed regarding the ethical dilemma of helping to
resolving a conflict between parents on making their terminally ill child a do not
resuscitate status.
Culture

Maintains an awareness of global environmental factors that may influence the

delivery of health and services
The global health assignment was a PowerPoint assignment in which our group

examined the World Health Organization (WHO), and its role in global research,
providing solutions and implementation of policies that affect diverse countries and
populations. Our group researched the global health problem of pertussis and
strategies the WHO used to deal with this global issue.
