Physical Education Philosophy

Iteachphysicaleducationtopromoteandencouragephysicalactivity,healthandthe
enjoymentofsocialinteractionsthatmakeupgames,sports,andactivities.Ibelievethatquality
teachinginphysicaleducationrequiresorganization,effectiveclassmanagement,creativity,
positivebehaviormodelingandtheabilitytocreateagroupofchallengingandattainable
activitiesthatstudentscandeveloptohavesuccessfulexperiencesinphysicalactivity.Good
teachingcreatesanatmosphereofenthusiasticinvolvement,developsasenseofcommunityand
allowsforpositiveandmeaningfulsocialinteractionsamongstudents,teachersandparents.This
requiresmodelingthetypeofattitudesandbehaviorthatwouldbringthesecomponentstogether.
Teachingphysicaleducationisanopportunitytodevelopandteachstudentsabout
differentskills,movements,techniques,tacticsandabilitiesneededtohavesuccesswhenbeing
active.Mygoalasateacheristoincreasestudentsopportunitiestoparticipateinavarietyof
activitiesnowandfortherestoftheirlife.Thiscanbeachievedthroughteachingbasicskillsat
theearliestopportunityastudenthastobeinvolvedinphysicaleducation.Byteachingand
developingbasicmotorandlocomotiveskillsinconjunctionwiththeabilitytomanipulate
objectswithgreatercontrol,accuracyandconfidencewillleadtogreaterselfawareness,
confidence,enjoyment,improvedhealthandincreasedfrequencyofparticipationinactivities
throughoutoneslife.Iftheseoutcomesareachieved,thensuccessfulteachingandlearningis
takingplace,whicharemyprimarygoalsasateacher.
Anotherofmyprimarygoalsasateacheriscreatingpositiveexperienceswherechildren
learnanddevelopnewskills,improveontheonestheyhavealreadyhave,experiencepositive
socialinteractionswiththeirpeerswillhelpfosterattitudesofrespect,fairness,andcooperation
inactivities,games,sportsandfitnesstoensurelifelongsuccess,health,andenjoymentin

physicaleducationandphysicalactivities.Ibelievethatthesegoalscanbeachievedbymodeling
thebehaviorIwantmystudentstodevelopaswellaspositivelyreinforcingthebehaviorthat
fostersasenseofcommunity,sportsmanshipandteamwork.
Ibelievechildrenshouldtakewiththempositiveexperiencesfromphysicaleducation
thatwillencouragethemtoparticipateinanyactivity,game,orsportfortherestoftheirlives.As
ateachermyroleistofacilitatethesepositiveexperiencestoallowforgreaterunderstandingand
enjoymentinactivities,gamesorsports.Enhancedpositiveexperienceswithenhancedskillswill
allowstudentstolearn,practiceanddevelophabitstomaintainorimprovetheirlevelofhealth,
havemoremeaningfulsocialinteractionsandgreaterlevelsofenjoymentthroughouttheirlife
throughactivity.Havingfunthroughapositivelearningenvironmentareextremelyimportantto
havingapositiveoutlooktowardsincreasedfutureinvolvementinphysicalactivityandphysical
educationclasses,andistheexpectedoutcomeIhaveformystudents.
Evidenceofleaningwouldbeexhibitedbytheadvancementofstudentsskills,increased
enthusiasm,positivecooperationamongstudentsandincreasinglevelsifhealthandwellbeing.
Theuseofinformalandformalassessmentswilldocumenttheseimprovements.Informal
assessmentsareusedonadailybasistoreinforcestudentsuccess.Formalassessmentswillbe
usedtodocumentprogressinfitnessassessmentsaswellasdemonstratingtheknowledgeof
propertechniquesandtacticsthatleadtohigherlevelsofskillexecutioningames,activities,and
sports.Successfullearningisalsodemonstratedthroughanimprovedsenseofselfefficacythat
studentswilldisplay.Thisisevidencethatstudentsaremotivated,committedandthoroughly
involvedintheirparticipationofphysicalactivity.Havingandkeepingmystudentsmotivated,
engagedinapositivelearningatmosphereandprovidingthemtheskilldevelopmenttheyneed
forsuccessfullevelsofparticipationinphysicalactivityisultimatelymyroleasaphysical
educator.
