Flex Grouping Lesson

Authors Purpose Continued
Co-teachers supported students with a SmartBoard
graphic aid (locating key words/details.)
Students practiced identifying Authors Purpose by

sitting or standing when asked specific questions.

Co-teachers distributed color-coded passages to

students and then instructed them to group-up in

designated areas according to their colors.

Flex Grouping Lesson

Authors Purpose Continued
All students received one passage in common,
then they were experts on two other passages
at their reading ability level.
Students were to underline the main idea of each

passage in RED and underline details/key words

in BLUE.
Each group was assigned a teacher to assist with

the small group lessons.

Flex Grouping Lesson

Students complete a PIE paper identifying the

authors purpose.
After all groups had finished, each group was

assigned a passage to present to the class.

Expert groups modeled the identification of

the main idea and details/key words and the

remainder of the class had to identify the
authors purpose.
