Controllers
AStorageCentercontrollerprovidesthecentralprocessingcapabilityfortheStorage
CenterOperatingSystem(OS),applicationsoftware(StorageCenterSystemManager),and
managingRAIDstorage.AStorageCentercanbeconfiguredwithasinglecontroller
(singlecontrollerStorageCenter)orapairofcontrollers(dualcontrollerStorageCenter).
InadualcontrollerStorageCenterconfiguration,thepairofcontrollersmustbethesame
controllermodel.
IOcardsinthecontrollerprovidecommunicationwithdriveenclosuresandserversthat
usethestorage.ControllersprovidetwotypesofIOports:
Frontendports:Hosts,servers,orNetworkAttachedStorage(NAS)appliancesaccess
storagebyconnectingtocontrollerFibreChannelIOcards,FCoEIOcards,oriSCSIIO
cardsthroughoneormoreFibreChannelorEthernetnetworkswitches.Portsforthese
connectionsarelocatedonthebackofthecontroller,butaredesignatedasfrontend
ports.
Backendports:Enclosures,whichholdthephysicaldrivesthatprovidebackend
storage,connectdirectlytothecontroller.FibreChannelandSAStransportsare
supportedthroughportsdesignatedasbackendports.Backendportsareintheirown
privatenetworkbetweenthecontrollersandthedriveenclosures.
Switches
DellCompellentoffersFibreChannel(FC)andiSCSIswitchesandIOcardsaspartofthe
totalStorageCenterproductpackage.Switchesproviderobustconnectivitytoservers,
allowingfortheuseofmultiplecontrollersandredundanttransportpaths.Cabling
betweenthecontrollerIOcardsandswitches(andservers)isreferredtoasfrontend
connectivity.
Enclosures
Enclosureshouseandcontroldrivesthatprovidestorage.Enclosuresareconnected
directlytocontrollerIOcards.Theseconnectionsarereferredtoasbackendconnectivity.
NewStorageCenterdeploymentsuse6GBSerialAttachedSCSI(SAS)diskenclosures.
