Needs Assessment:
The Newton County School System is implementing a new Learning Management System called Canvas.
The county Technology Department would like to see this LMS be the stepping stone to a 1:1 initiative as
well as a way to get more student participation with their work. The district is also looking at the possibility
of this LMS being useful for bad weather days. If the LMS becomes so integrated within the classroom, bad
weather days would not need to be made up as the work on the LMS would substitute for the missing day.
Middle Ridge Elementary has the following statements in their School Improvement Plan:
Students will use digital tools/technology to conduct research, solve problems, and/or create original
works for learning.
Students will use digital tools/technology to communicate and work collaboratively for learning.
Due to this county initiative, it has been decided by the administration of Middle Ridge Elementary that the
faculty need to be provided with training on this new LMS. It has been determined that the focus of the
training will be on creating a course, assigning schoolwork, and uploading resources. By providing the
educators with a few basic skills on these topics and best practices for using the LMS, the teachers can
immediately begin working on the new LMS to be prepared for next school year.
