Quadratic Project

Goal: For this project, you will work as a group of three to design a tri-fold brochure or alternate display that will
summarize what you have learned during your study of the unit on quadratic functions. You may choose to
make a brochure, poster, powerpoint presentation, video, etc. All projects must be approved by the teacher
beforehand. You may not work on this project alone. Your group participation is an integral part of your grade;
if you do not work as a group, the highest score you can get is a 50%.

Team Members: All team members must play an active role in completing this project. Each person will take
responsibility for completing certain jobs. In order to ensure that this happens, each team member will grade
the other members of the team at the end of the project.

Grading: This project will count as a Test for term 4. You will be graded using the attached rubric as well as
your peer evaluation form. 10 points will be deducted from your grade for each day the project is late.

Project Requirements: The following information must be included on your project

Cover Page
For a brochure, this must include a title for your brochure and the names of the group members
For a PowerPoint presentation, this must include a title for your slide show and the names of the
group members
For an online poster, this must include a title for your poster and the names of the group members

Vocabulary Section: These vocabulary terms must be defined in your OWN WORDS. The definitions can
be placed on one panel of a brochure, can be placed on one slide of a PowerPoint, can be placed in a
section of the poster, or integrated into the presentation in some way. You must complete the work on a
separate sheet of paper and submit it to the teacher for approval before it can be placed on your project
(can be typed and emailed to teacher)
Axis of symmetry
Discriminant
Maximum / Minimum
Quadratic Formula
Standard Form
Vertex Form
Vertex
Zeros/Roots/Intercepts

Description Sections: You must EXPLAIN the topics and what each topic means. You will complete
problems that you will use for each section. You must complete the work on a separate sheet of paper
and submit it to the teacher for approval before it can be placed on your final project.

Word Problem: Each group will be assigned a real-life word problem that must be solved and included in
your project. You must complete the work on a separate sheet of paper and submit it to the teacher for
approval before it can be placed on your project

Real Life Scenario: Each group must create an example of quadratics in real life, draw a picture of the
scenario, identify and explain in the context the following:
vertex
maximum or minimum
y-intercept
roots
Resources: You may use your notes, the textbooks in the back of the room, and the internet for information.

Final Project Due

Audience: Assume that the reader is not familiar with Quadratic functions. Be creative. Include all graphs/
illustrations necessary to understand your explanation.

Quadratic Project

Finding roots- Choose 2 problems from each category (total of 6)

A. Factoring

B. Quadratic Formula

C. Completing the Square

12x 2 + 20x 8

4x 2 + 7x 15 = 0

2x 2 8x 10 = 0

15x 3 + 3x + 40x 2 + 8

5x 2 47x = 156

x 2 2x 323 = 0

14x 3 35x 2 + 16x 40

3x 2 + 44x = 96

4x 2 8x 24 = 0

Identifying parts of a Quadratic Function on a graph- Choose 1 problem. Sketch the graph and
identify all parts of the Quadratic Function:

y=

y = 4x 2 16x 3

1 2
x + 2x + 6
2

y = 3x 2 9x + 2

Discriminant - Choose 3 problems. Find the discriminant and explain what it means:
x 2 2x + 3 = 0

x 2 + 3x + 11 = 0

9x 2 + 12x + 4 = 0

x 2 + 7x 5 = 0

Vertex Form of a Quadratic Equation- Choose 2 problems. Change from standard to vertex form
and identify the vertex:

x 2 3x + 10 = 0

x 2 + 6x + 11 = 0

x 2 2x + 14 = 0

x 2 + 7x 15 = 0

Transformations- Choose 3 problems. Describe the transformations.

3(x + 2)2 4

2x 2 + 7

0.5(x 1)2 9

(x + 2)2 4

Word Problem (will be assigned to each group by teacher)

1. When a grey kangaroo jumps, its path through the air can be modeled by y = 0.0267x 2 + 0.8x , where x is
the kangaroos horizontal distance traveled in feet and y is its corresponding height in feet. How high can a
grey kangaroo jump? How far can it jump?
2. In baseball, the flight of a pop-up may be described as d(t) = 16t 2 + 80t + 3.5 where d gives the balls
height above the ground in feet as a function of time t. How long does the catcher have to get position under
the ball after the ball is hit? How high will the ball get?
3. Corey hits a golf ball. The height of the ball is given by h(x) = 16x 2 + 4013x + 3250 where h(t) represents
the heigh in yards above the ground and x is the horizontal distance the ball travels in yards. How far does
Corey hit the ball? What is the maximum height of the ball?
