Rational Statement for Standard 10
Standard 10: Leadership and Collaboration:
The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for
student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals,
and community members to ensure learners growth, and to advance the profession.
Artifact: Welcome Letter
Date of Completion: March 3, 2016
Course Completed in: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
A welcome letter is the teachers personalized introduction to the parents and students;
letting them know the expectations for them and what they can expect from their educator. It
opens up the lines of communication between not just teacher and parent, but between parent and
student. The parents will have a solid idea of what their child will be doing and can then know
for what knowledge or projects they can support them in and check up on their progress in a
more effective manner. As stated in Standard 10 Performance IV, the teacher works
collaboratively with learners and their families to establish mutual expectations and ongoing
communication to support learner development and achievement collaboration is vital and
establishing that even prior to the beginning of class is a great step to having it be a helpful force
all year long (NJPST, 2014, p13). Although these letters are obviously addressed to the parents,
they are also a good preview for the students to the class as well as to their teachers personality.
In a way it should put both of those groups at ease, establishing not only expectations, but that
the person they are intrusting to their/their childs education has a strong understanding of not
only their content knowledge, but of proper social interaction and communication skills.

As the future teacher in this trifecta, writing this letter helped me consolidate my desires
for the class and word them in a concise manner intelligible to those who are either not teachers
or who are without really any specialized experience with my subject. I had to refine it several
times and identify the core points of the class that I felt necessary to be a proper introduction to
myself and the class. Over time this letter will change, as I grow, possibly teach different levels
of Spanish, and even a different language, but over all this letter is a solid foundation that I can
build and use at the very least as a guide to adapt to any situation.
