This artifact is my research paper form the multicultural education course.

This paper
goes in depth on my learning from studying American Indian/Alaska Natives. I researched
learning styles, historical background knowledge, and many other aspects of their culture that
impacts how these children learn in a classroom setting.
I thought this was an interesting culture to study because of their history in the
educational system. I acquired information about boarding schools, and how this culture was
forced to assimilate into the dominant white culture in history. This deepened my understanding
because it provided me evidence of how I shouldnt run a classroom.
This culture is so rich with tradition, and rituals. Both of these can easily be incorporated
in to the classroom where students from every background can benefit. I also learned that
students from this culture are very auditory and visual learners. This is because of the emphasis
on oral stories passed down from generation to generation. In the paper I conducted an interview
that goes in to slight detail about what it was like being a Native American in the American
school system. Ignorance of the American Indian/Alaska Native culture was my biggest take
away from this interview. Many people dont care to understand how rich this culture, and I
believe these people are missing out.
As I reflect upon this research paper I realize I have gained an immense amount of
knowledge that will benefit me as a teacher. The interview opened up my eyes to the ignorance
taking place in schools, this ignorance of the culture is only promoting discrimination in schools.
I also learned the many aspects that go into the Native American culture. I was able to learn
about the multiple intelligences that best suit students from this cultural background. Therefore, I

believe that this assignment demonstrated my ability describe characteristics, cultural aspects of
a diverse set of learners.
