TherearenownoconnectionsfortheVANOSnon-returnvalvesastheyhavebeenintegratedinthe
solenoidvalves.Thecylinderheadfurtherfeaturescoolingchannelsaboutthefuelinjectors,providing
indirectcooling.

Thecylinderheadcoverisanewdevelopment.Thevacuumaccumulatorforthevacuumsystemisintegratedinthecylinderheadcover.

headcover.Theintegratednon-returnvalvesensurethattheblow-bygassesarereliablyaddedtothe
intakeair.

Fuelquantitycontrol
Therailpressuresensormeasuresthecurrentfuelpressureintherail.Theexcessfuelisreturnedto
theinlettothehighpressurepumpwhenthequantitycontrolvalveinthehighpressurepumpopens.
Restrictedvehicleoperationispossibleintheeventofthehighpressurepumpfailing.
Thequantitycontrolvalvecontrolsthefuelpressureintherail.Theenginemanagementactuatesthe
quantitycontrolvalvewithapulsewidth-modulatedsignal.Dependingonthepulsewidth,avariable
throttlecrosssectionisreleased,thusprovidingthequantityoffuelrequiredforthecurrentloadstatus
oftheengine.Itisadditionallypossibletoreducethepressureintherail.
12.2.2.Boostpressurecontrol
Theenginemanagementcontrolstheboostpressurewiththewastegatevalveattheexhaustturbocharger.Anelectropneumaticpressureconverterwhichconvertsthesignalsfromtheenginemanagementanddefinedvacuumisusedtoadjustthewastegatevalveinfinitelyvariablewithvacuum.
Adivertervalveisflangedtotheexhaustturbocharger.Thisdivertervalvecancontroltheenginemanagementdirectly,thusestablishingaconnectionbetweentheintakesideandthepressureside.The
divertervalvecaneliminateundesirablepeaksintheboostpressurethatcanoccurwhenthethrottlevalveisclosedquickly.Thedivertervalvethereforehasadecisiveinfluenceontheengineacousticswhileprotectingthecomponentsoftheexhaustturbocharger.Apressurewaveisbuiltupfromthe
throttlevalvetotheexhaustturbochargerwhenthethrottlevalveisclosed.Thispressurewavecomes
upagainsttheturbinebladesintheexhaustturbochargerandpressesthemagainstthebearings.The
divertervalvesubstantiallyreducesthispressurewaveandthustheloadontheexhaustturbocharger.
12.2.3.Enginecooling
Theadvantagesoftheconventionalcoolingsystemareutilisedforthecoolingsystemwithelectriccoolantpump.Theheatmanagementdeterminesthecurrentcoolingrequirementandcontrols
thecoolingsystemaccordingly.Undercertaincircumstances,thecoolantpumpcanbecompletely
switchedoff,e.g.torapidlyheatupthecoolantduringthewarm-upphase.Thecoolantpumpcontinuestooperatewhenthehotengineisshutdown.Thecoolantcapacitycanthereforebevariedirrespectiveoftheenginespeed.Inadditiontothecharacteristicmapthermostat,theheatmanagement
makesitpossibletousevariouscharacteristicmapsforcontrollingthecoolantpump.Inthiswaythe
enginecontrolunitcanadapttheenginetemperaturetothedrivingconditions.

Theenginemanagementsetsahighertemperature(108C)when,basedonvehicleoperation,the
enginecontrolunitdetectsEconomymode.Theengineisoperatedwithrelativelylowfuelrequirementsinthistemperaturerange.Theinternalenginefrictionisreducedathighertemperatures.The
increaseintemperaturethereforerealiseslowfuelconsumptioninthelowloadrange.ThedriverwishestoutilisetheoptimumpowerdevelopedbytheengineinHighandcontrolwithcharacteristicmap
thermostatmode.Forthispurpose,thetemperatureinthecylinderheadisreducedto90C.This
temperaturereductionpromotesimprovedvolumetricefficiency,thusresultinginanincreasedengine
torque.Adaptedtotherelevantdrivingsituation,theenginecontrolunitcannowregulateadefined
operatingrange.Inthiswayitispossibletoinfluencethefuelconsumptionandpoweroutputthrough
thecoolingsystem.

Itisessentialtoobservetheutmostcleanlinesswhenworkingonthehighpressurefuelsystemand
followtheworkingproceduresdescribedintherepairinstructions.Evenminutesoilinganddamageat
thescrewconnectionsofthehighpressurelinescouldcauseleaks.
ParticularcaremustbetakenwhenworkingonthefuelsystemoftheN55enginetoensurethatthe
ignitioncoilsarenotsoiledwithfuel.Theresistanceofthesiliconematerialisgreatlyreducedbycontactwithfuel.Thiscouldresultinsparkoveratthetopofthesparkplugandmisfiring.
