    APLiteratureandComposition:
    Welcome!APLiteratureandCompositionisdesignedtoprepareyoufortheAPLiteratureand
    Compositionexamsothatyouwillpassthetestandearncollegecredit.Youwillbereadinga
    widevarietyoftexts,manyofwhichmaybemoredifficultthanyouhaveencounteredinthe
    past.Inordertofacilitatemaximumlearningitiscrucialthatyoureadthetextsassignedanddo
    yourownthinkingabouttheliterature.Fortheclasstobeassuccessfulaspossibleyoumust
    participateindiscussions.Thiscoursewillalsofocusonvitalaspectsofwritingthatwillaide
    youontheAPtestandfuturecollegewriting.Youwillbeaskedtowriteoften,bothinformally
    andformally.

    OurExpectationsofYou:

    Youwillreadallrequiredreadingandyouwillreaditwithcare.Ifyoudonotunderstand
    areading,youwilltakethenecessarymeasurestounderstand(usingoutsidesources,
    askingquestionsinclass,etc).Plantoreadforclassatleastahalfhourdaily.Inthis
    courseyouwillreadawidevarietyoftextsfromvariousgenres.Novelsinparticular
    requireplanning.Bepreparedtoreadeverynight.
    Attendanceiscrucialbecausediscussion/lecturesareimpossibletomakeup.Itisyour
    responsibilitytoarrangeatimetomakeupmissedassignments.Youwillbeexpectedto
    copyanynotestakenduringclasswhenyoureturn.Allassignmentsandnotesmissed
    duetoabsencemustbemadeupwithinoneweekofyourreturn,afterwhichthegrade
    fortheassignmentwillbeenteredasazero.
    Alwaysbringallnecessarymaterialstoclass:notebook,writingutensils,andclasstext
    Listencarefullytoyourclassmatesduringdiscussionsandfocusonideas,notindividual
    personalities.Berespectfultoeveryoneintheroomanddonotinterruptorarguesimply
    tobeargumentative.Trynottoberedundantforthesakeofhearingyourownvoice.

    Pleasedonotinsultyourself,orme,byplagiarizingfromtheinternetoranyothersource.
    Theconsequenceofplagiarismisazerowithnopossibilityforearningthepointsback.

    Writing:
    AsidefromdailywritingandexercisestoprepareyouforwritingtheessaysontheAPexam,
    mostofthetextswillhaveaformalwritingcomponent.Theclasswillexaminevitalcomponents
    ofwritingincluding,butnotlimitedto:invention,structure,style(diction,syntax,figurative
    language,andmechanics).Whiletheremaybeopportunitiestoreviseyourworkforabetter
    grade,thiswillnotalwaysbethecase.Keepinmind,youwillnotbeabletorevisetheAPtest,
    andwillhavemanyclassesincollegewhereyoucannotreviseyourwork.Duetothefactthat
    thisisequivalenttoanentrylevelcollegecourse,allwritingwillbegradedatahigherlevelthan
    youmaybeusedto.Themostimportantthingtousisthatyouimproveandarepreparedfor
    college.Thebestwaytoimproveistotalktousabouthowyoucangetbetter.Ifyouare
    concernedaboutyourgradepleasecometoseeus,asourgoalistoseeyouallsucceedand
    passtheAPtestinMay.
    Ifthereisanythingspecificconcerningyourwritingthatyouareconcernedabout,please
    letusknowsothatwecanaddressiteitherasawholeclassoronanindividualbasis.
