WhoArethey?
OneofthemostimportantrescuersofJewsduringtheNaziHolocaustgoesbythename
ofChiuneSugihara.Hisfather,YoshimizuSugihara,wantedhissontobeadoctor,buthe
purposefullyfailedhisexambecausehewantedtobecomealinguist.Yatsu,hismotherwas
resembledinherson.Hisactionssaved40,000descendantsofJewishrefugees.Hewasthe
JapaneseConsulGeneralinKovno,Lithuaniain1939and1940.SugiharaissuedJapanesetransit
visastoasmanyas6,000PolishJewswiththeencouragementofhiswife,Yukiko.Heactedon
hisownwithouttheofficialpermissionofhisgovernment.ChiunewantedtohelpthePolish
Jews,soheaskedhisgovernmentthreetimesifhecouldissuevisas,butbecauseofJapans
alliancewithGermany,theMinistryofForeignAffairsrefusedeachrequest.

Lithuaniain1939and1940.SugiharaissuedJapanesetransitvisastoasmanyas6,000Polish
Jewswiththeencouragementofhiswife,Yukiko.Heactedonhisownwithouttheofficial
