Diabetes Overview printout
String
2 crumpled balls of paper per child
Procedure:
Opening set: The students and teacher will watch the above video together.

Instructional sequence: Together, the students will read the printout with the
teacher and review what the video stated. They will review the practices that are
needed to manage diabetes as listed on the video and printout. The teacher will
place a string down the middle of the classroom and ask the students to crumple up
2 sheets of plain paper each. She will tell the students that they are insulin
molecules in a blood vessel and they must throw all of the sugar molecules (the
crumpled pieces of paper) into the cell across the string. The teacher will give the
students two minutes to try to clear all of the sugar out of their blood vessel.
Whichever side has the least amount of sugar molecules left after two minutes gets
a point. This activity will be repeated 2-3 times.
Independent practice: Students will draw a picture of a cell with a door and the
glucose trying to get in, as viewed on the video.
Closure: The teacher will review the causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the
necessary steps to controlling the disease.
Adaptations: Sugar molecules can be handed to those with seeing disabilities and
those confined to wheelchairs.
Assessment of students: Students will be given a blank sheet of paper and asked to
list 3 things a diabetic person must do to manage their disease.
