Job Description
Job Title: High School Classroom Teacher
Department: Science
Reports To: School Principal
Location: Riverview High School

Job Summary
The High School Classroom Teacher at Riverview High School is responsible for the
education of students between the ages of 15 and 18 in the public school system.
The incumbent is responsible for meeting the educational requirements set forth by
the province. The teacher is expected to follow the educational materials that are
set forth in the curriculum issued by the Cape Breton Regional District School Board.
Working Relationships
Parents of students: parents need to be aware of how their child is doing in
school, if there are any learning disabilities or behavioral problems and the
steps they need to take to resolve the problems.
Principal: the teacher informs the principal if there are any problems in the
classroom that relate to learning or behavior so the principal can solve any
issues that may arise.
Social workers: the teacher will inform the school social worker if they suspect
a child is being abused, either sexually or physically.
Guidance councillors: the teacher will inform the guidance councillor if they
are having an issue with a particular student, whether is signs of abuse or
neglect or learning abilities, and the guidance councillor can council the
student and determine the best course of action.
Prepare lesson plans that follow the curriculum issued by the Cape Breton
Regional School Board
Council students on academic matters. Provide student encouragement and
develop individualized work plans to suit student needs
Monitor strengths and weaknesses of cognitive abilities and assess the
students education level by grading their work and helping them understand
the material being taught

Key Competencies
Problem solving skills- when problems arise teachers can ask other teachers
how they resolved similar conflicts or consult with the parents and student
files
Written and oral communication skills- teachers need to be able to convey
teaching materials to the students in a way they will understand and they
need to write clear and concise notes on student assessments and report
cards that convey learning requirements to parents and students
Critical thinking and creativity- teachers need to create Individual Program
Plans (IPP) for students with learning disabilities and know how to make a
seating plan so they can place every student in a spot that will suit their
needs and prevent conflict
Flexibility and adaptability- teachers work minimum 6 hours a day and must
be able to stay late to tutor students having problems with materials or for
parent-teacher meetings
Organization and planning- teachers need to be able to organize their
classroom, so it is free from clutter, and plan their day to cover everything
outlined in the curriculum
Qualifications
Post secondary degree from a recognized institution
B.Ed. in Secondary Education
Masters Degree would be an asset
Provincial teaching licence required
Compensation
40,000-70,000 annually
Having a masters degree increases your pay grade
There is a yearly increase until you reach 10 years of service
