Activity Design Plan
Activity Objective
The students will comprehend the Civil War by explaining the economic, social,
and political causes.

Description of the Activity

The students will play a game called Civil War Jeopardy. The students will work in groups of
three, determined by drawing Popsicle sticks. Each group will be assigned a
number from 1-10. The students will take turns answering for the group,
however their teammates may assist with answering the question. The
teacher will conduct and oversee the game. One student will be chosen to
keep track of the score. The score keeper will work with the teacher and not
be on a team. The score keeper will also be chosen by drawing a popsicle
stick. Each question will be worth one point each.
With the PowerPoint projected, use the view show function to display the
categories. The teacher will choose the first question. After one group has
earned a point, they will choose the next question. This cycle will continue.
There will be three categories and eight questions for each category,
numbered 1-8. One student will pick the category and specific question

number. At this point the teacher will display the question. Groups will signal
that they have an answer by having at least one student raise their hand.
The group has 10 seconds to answer the question before another group will
have the opportunity to answer.

Student responses will be in Jeopardy

question format. The game will continue until all of the categories and point
values have been exhausted. The will be three categories of Civil War
questions. The categories will be Important Figures, Important Dates, and
Events.

Motivation
The extrinsic motivation for the activity will be three extra credit points
added to the upcoming Civil War end of unit test. The team with the most
points will receive the three extra credit points. The second place team will
receive two and the third place team will receive one. The score keeper will
keep track of the points.
The intrinsic motivation will be receiving review questions for the upcoming
end of unit test. The students will receive review that will help them recall
prior learning and be better prepared for the unit test. At the end of the
game, Quizlet cards with all terms and correct answers will be passed out to
the students so they may continue to study the terms.
Directions

1.
2.
3.
4.

Each group will start with zero points. All questions will be worth one point each.
The teacher will choose the first question.
Groups will be called on by their number (1-10).
Once a group has earned a point, the group answering the last question correctly will
choose the next question.
5. Once the question has been read, groups will signal that they are ready to answer by
having at least one member of the group raise their hand.
6. Answers are not to be stated until the teacher has called on the group.
7. Groups have 10 seconds to answer.
8. Students may talk amongst their group quietly to discuss the questions.
9. If a group fails to answer, the group that raised their hands second may be called on. If
they fail to answer the question the teacher will state the correct answer and no group will
receive points for that question.
10. Groups will have one point taken away for announcing an answer without being called
on.
11. Once all questions have been used, points will be counted by the teacher and score keeper
to determine the top three groups.

Active Participation:
Students will battle each other (one from each group will go to the front and
answer the question) if both groups get the question wrong, anyone in the
class has the power to answer the question and win the points (so everyone
should stay alert) also, students will be required to write the questions and
answers on notecards or a separate sheet of paper so they are actively
engaged while waiting their turn (the children will be sitting in rows either
side to side or back to front, one after another will answer the question to
minimize transition times).

Expectation of Students Behavior:

Directions and expectations of the students will be clearly expressed by the
Teacher and the students will agree by responding, yes. If the Teacher
needs something in the middle of the game, she will raise her hand high in

the air so everyone can see and silence their voices until further instruction
are given. Students are to be seated during the game, aisle ways will be
prepared for one student walking straight to the front of the room.

Materials/Resources Needed:
Smart board preferably, or an overhead projector so students can see
options and select their sub category. Pencils and paper will also be used for
keeping track of points and participation (participation will be determined by
Teacher) as well as writing the questions and answers for study guides. The
prize will be 2 points extra credit or they can skip ONE multiple-choice
question on the test, whichever they would like to use (same value).

Modeling:
We will do a game preview before the actual game starts. It will be a random
category that the Teacher makes as a demonstration. Each team will answer
about five questions for fictional point value just so everyone knows and can
clearly see rules and expectations of the review game. After practice round,
the scores will be wiped clean and we will be ready to take on the real deal.
