Overview
Throughout the 19th century, European history was speckled with war. Although lives were
lost and property destroyed true devastation was never the result. However the industrial
advancements which had shaped a better standard of living, created a new age of war- a
period marked by greater destruction, devastation, and lose of life than all of the previous
centurys wars combined. In addition to the advanced weaponry, WWI was also unique in
that it was the first true world war. This conflict involved all the industrialized great

powers of Europe. It pitted the Triple Entente powers or the Allies (Great Britain,
France and Russia) against the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary). By
1915-16, this essentially European war became a world war when Turkey and
Bulgaria joined the Central Powers and Italy, Japan and Romania joined the allies.
Eventually, the Western Hemisphere would be pulled into the war with the
entrance of the United States.
Historians generally cite four major causes for WWI: nationalism, militarism, imperialism,
and alliance system. In other words:
The breakdown of the "Concert of Europe" established at the Congress of Vienna
(1815) with the realignment of the Great Powers after the emergence of a unified
Germany
The surfacing of an "arms race" between industrialized nations in Europe,
particularly a naval arms race Britain and German.
The appearance of a more militaristic nationalism personified in Kaiser Wilhelm.

Rationale
The first World War changed human history forever. New, more deadly weapons were
introduced, words like weapons of mass destruction, genocide, and communism became
part of the worlds general vocabulary, and the results of the war proved to be more
terrible than anyone could imagine at the time, as it led the way to World War II. The fact
that World War one was the first Total War, the fact that it was a liberating experience for
women, and the fact that it was the first industrialized war and in effect completed the
industrialization of the West Makes it important.
