Believe it or not, youre still experiencing some firsts: fine lines, visible pores and dull complexion.
Chances are, you didnt realize that these were your first signs of aging. Your regular moisturizer
just isnt cutting it anymore because your cellular turnover started to slow down. You need
something more.
New Idalia Day Care, enriched with Vitamin E and Kombucha, an ingredient from Ceylon black tea,
improves skin radiance and minimizes the look of fine lines as well as pores. 82% of women noticed
their fine lines looked reduced and their skin looked more radiant.1
Your life is changing; so should your skin care. See how Idealia works for you at vichy.ca

DINOMITE!
When fashion director Juliana
Schiavinatto was planning
the shoots for this issue, she
had one request. I want to
shoot with real dinosaurs,
she said. I like the irony and
juxtaposition of exploring
the future by looking to the
past. Any ideas on where we
could shoot? Give me a
few days, I said. I then called
the Royal Tyrrell Museum of
Palaeontology in Drumheller,
Alta., to see if theyd be keen
on having their world-famous
dinos featured in a fashion
spread. It was a first for
themand definitely a first
for us, shooting our model

the famous Albertosaurus

1. The 14-year wait for the sequel was all her fault. I always knew a
sequel would involve Toula as a parent, and in reality it was very difficult
for me to become pregnant. Can you imagine a press tour with me having gone through all these fertility treatments on a quest to be a mom and
people are like, Well, wheres your baby? [Vardalos now has a daughter.]
2. The film has a very simple message. No matter what your age is, no

REBOO
Rapper Iggy Azalea as youve never heard her before:
vulnerable, humble and ready to start again.
By Aliyah Shamsher Photographs by Max Abadian
IGGY AZALEA MAY BE ONE of the most polarizing figures in the music industry today. Since releasing her
first album, The New Classic, in 2014, the 25-year-old
Australian has proudly defended her right to be a white
female rapper. In doing so, she has amassed a legion of
devoted fans who have been interacting on social media
with the musician almost daily since her early days producing mixtapes. Shortly after releasing The New Classic, her
singles Fancy and Problem held the number one and
number two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot
100 chart. (FYI, no artist has been able to achieve this feat
since the Beatles.) She has also received industry praise over
the past two years in the form of four Grammy nominations, two American Music Awards and three Billboard
Music Awards.
As all of this was happening, however, an emotionally
charged debate about race, gender and the socio-political
state of the hip-hop scene was also heating up. By mid2015, the conversation engulfed Azalea when her public
feud with rapper Azealia Banks went viral. In the wake
of protests in Ferguson, Mo., New York and Baltimore,
Md., Banks called her out for not commenting, tweeting her

IGGYS BACKSTORY
Azalea was born Amethyst
Amelia Kelly in Sydney, Australia,
but when she was a child, her
family moved to Mullumbimby,
on the east coast, north of Byron
Bay. I come from a town that
has 3,000 people in it and two
streets. No one wears high
heelsin fact, people often dont
even wear shoes. Its not weird
to be in the supermarket and
see someone without shoes.
When she was 11, her grandparents took her and her sister
on a trip to California, which
Azalea describes as life changing. It was just so ridiculous and
crazy. It was like everything I had
seen in the movies. There are no
limits in America, and I like that
because Im a very ridiculous
person. Rap music came into
her life shortly after, and by 16
she had dropped out of school
and decided that the United
States was where she needed
to be. She landed a job cleaning
houses with the goal of saving
enough money to get to Miami.
I basically spent my last year in
Australia being psychotically obsessed with saving money to go
to America. It was very planned
out: How much money do I need
to get there? How much money
will I need for food? Azalea
has now lived in the United
States for almost a decade and
currently lives in L.A. with her
fianc, Los Angeles Laker Nick
Young. Theres a lot going on
hereand its way more complex
than when I was 14 and living
in Australia. But I still love it, and
I will live here forever. Its complicated, but its worth it.
66
culture and black music, so it becomes a racial conversationversus Keith Urban, who is making country music,
which is considered white. It becomes a very muddy area.
And it became especially difficult in 2015. The United
States has such a fraught history with race, and I dont
think I realized how prevalent racism still is and how hurt
people still are until I moved here and saw it for myself.
As I was growing up in Australia, it was easy to think
Well, that was then and obviously its not like that now.
Its not something you can understand when youre on the
other side of the world. But many people think I still live
in that bubble and that I dont understand that the United
States is set up in a way that doesnt benefit minorities. Ive
lived here for 10 years now, and I dont want it to be that
way either. Im marrying a black man, and my children
will be half blackof course I care about these things.
And I understand if youre not comfortable that I rap with
an American accent, and you are totally entitled to your
own opinions, but you dont have to listen to my music.
Im still going to keep making music.
Are you looking for acceptance from the hip-hop community? Certain people who dont like me think that I dont
love rap music, but I love rap music. I love it like its my
fucking husband.... I think a lot of people in hip hop h

have a tough time finding something in common with me.
At least white [and black] male rappers both have dicks
and theyre American. But for me, Im a white woman
from Australia. I get it, but I think we have a lot more in
common than they think.
If you could redo anything from 2015, would you? Umm,
yeah...of course. If I could, I would Men in Black
memory-erase 2015, I totally wouldthat would be
amazing! Oh, God, there are so many things. I think the
Azealia Banks thing is what really started it all. We dont
like each other on a personal level, and that has gone on
for many yearsbefore the Black Lives Matter incident
happened. So when I dismissed her, people started to
think that I dismissed the whole movement, but I wasnt
trying to dismiss Black Lives MatterI was trying to
dismiss her because its our personal shit. I dont think the
subject matter of her tweet was invalid; I just think it was
emotionally charged and driven by something else, and
the whole thing got so misconstrued. I just wish I had
acknowledged the issue head-on because it made people
think I dont care about whats going on socially and
it. Its just part of life. You can do without it; I did without
it for a couple of months and it was great. I was able to
record my second album without any distractions, which
really allowed me to enjoy the whole process again. Now
Im definitely back and talking to fans, but there are some
things I dont do anymore.
Like what? I dont look at the comments anymore. Well,
I say that, but Im only human. I love talking to fans, but
then you end up in some random comment section and
accidentally find things that can really affect youwhether you realize it or not at the time. Its tough.
At what point did you realize you were ready to go back
online? I felt like not being on social media, in a way, was
letting those other people win. And before, I felt like Okay,
so what if they win? I need my sanity, and if that is what
it takes to have my sanity back, then they can win. But then
I realized that there are people out there who do support
me and want to interact with me online, and I shouldnt let
other people take that away from me and my fans.
What did you learn about yourself through all of this? I
think the biggest lesson I learned is that people are going
68
to say what theyre going to say. And its really hard not
to get emotional or become overly sensitive about other
peoples opinions, especially if you feel like theyre wrong.
But I think I spent a lot of energy last year trying to explain my side of the story because I thought If you could
just understand my side, surely youd agree with me. But
some people arent ever going to agree with youand
thats just life.
That pretty much sums up your year in 2015. Yes, but in a
weird way Im glad for it all. Because of what happened,
there were a lot of friendships that I ended up rekindling
and people I started working with again. It made me reflect
and change things that I may not have even considered
changing before. So, Im really glad that it all happened.
One of those friendships is with your old producers,
D.R.U.G.S., who produced your mixtape Ignorant Art in
2011. Ive known these guys since 2010; they were my
ON PLASTIC SURGERY
I think, in 2016, people should
be more accepting of the fact
that both famous and non-famous
women are having cosmetic procedures. Thats just the reality. And
I think more people need to admit
that shit so it doesnt have to be
so taboobecause were all doing
it anyway.
I wanted to change my nose
because I didnt grow up with a
bump on itthat happened when I
got smashed in the face with a soccer ball when I was 16. Now I feel
like my nose looks the way its supposed to look. But for how long do
we have to acknowledge that I got
a nose job? For the rest of my life?
Am I going to be 45 and people are
still saying Nice nose job?
Everyone tells you that you
should love your body the way it
is, but then it is bad to say that you
want to change something about
yourself not because you want to
look like someone else, just because you want to? Whats wrong
with that?
Theres nothing black and white
about beauty or plastic surgery.
There are no guarantees that it
will fix how you feel about yourself.
All of those women [who criticize
someone for having surgery]if
they had $10 million in their account tomorrow, Id dare them
not to change one thing about
themselves or at least think about
it. Yes, there are some women who
wouldnt change a thing, but, for
the majority of us, wed be thinking
about that one thing. And theres
nothing wrong with that. I just
hope that in 25 years the conversation will shift to where if a woman
wants to change her body, all we
say is Good for her! instead of
shaming her for making decisions
about her own body.

If someone comes with a very specific question (such as Will I get married
in 2016?), can you actually answer? I can
usually give them a guided answer. For example, if I dont see a relationship happening for

see anything for them. I can only give them the
answers I am being shown by my guides.

Some 10 years into the QS movement,
theres an app for just about anything youd
want to track: Apples Health (found on iOS
9) is equipped to collect data on everything
from your patterns of sexual activity to your
body temperature; Start, an app that helps
you determine how well your prescription
antidepressants are working, encourages you
to log your moods; Checky gives you stats on
how often you peek at your phone; and
Chronos tells you where your hours go (in
transit, working overtime, being spontaneous). This year, the latest wearables include
smart jewellery, like Bellabeat Leaf, which
can be worn either as a necklace or a brooch
and tracks stress levels as well as menstrual
and ovulation cycles; hearables, which are
earbuds that monitor your heart rate; headbands that measure your brainwaves; smart
clothing that helps prevent injuries by determining if youre putting too much pressure
on certain body parts; and invisibles, a.k.a.
biometric tattoos.
If the QS industry seems health focused,
its because physical activity and processes
are the easiest to quantify. The global wearables market is expected to reach a value of
$26 billion by 2018, with the Fitbit being
hailed as king. But why track at all? What can
we really learn from knowing every minute
detail of our existence? Even Wolf asked in
his 2010 TED Talk (through which many first
learned about QS): What is the Quantified
Self for? What should it be for? While it
has primarily been used for product market
research and development and biometric
security (like Apples Touch ID system), Wolf
argues that the quest for self-knowledge is
whats truly driving this industry.
Eric Boyd, Toronto-based creator of
wearable-electronics company Sensebridge,
used to live in San Francisco and attended
early QS Meetups run by Wolf and Kelly.
In 2010, Boyd became one of the founding
organizers of Quantified Self Toronto.
[During early QS meetings], we attracted
people who were more interested in fundamental questions about themselves, he
says. It was people who were tracking
using spreadsheets or pen and paper. The

efore I got married, I eagerly said yes a lot:

the whats-mine-is-mine approach to love and money
brought familiar comfort. But now that were all in, the
stakes are up. And I want a new closet. Hed prefer a 4K
TV. I suggest we save for a cottage instead. So who wins?
And, more importantly, who pays?
Just like that, my new husband and I are right in line
with the 41 percent of young Canadian couples who, in
2013, told accounting firm MNP that financial stress affects their relationship. The same year, a BMO survey
found that while 98 percent of married couples know
its important to be on the same financial page, less than
half of engaged couples discuss how they plan to handle
money once theyre married. (We were in the smarter half,
albeit just barely, splitting expenses down the middle with
a loose if-it-aint-broke strategy for the future. Whether its
fair, however, has been an ongoing debate.)

Space-age details on the catwalk have become synonymous with the futuristic trend
today, but the details themselves havent
changed all that much since the 60s, despite
the fact that our grasp of the concept of the

fashion is so easy to recognize, can it really be
considered clairvoyant?
To start, the ubiquitous overlay of braided

leitmotif of the collections is actually a 21stcentury update of the chain-mail minidresses
Paco Rabanne constructed with a pair of

Antioxidants are natures way of protecting your body against harmful free radicals. Whether
youve heard the term free radicals before in chemistry class or through your own experience

Pradas latest scent leaves
plenty to the reimagination.
efore brands launch a fragrance, they tend to
test it against other scents on the market. You
would think they want to launch something
unique, but typically they want assurances that
their scent is similar, explains Emmanuelle Moeglin,
global fragrance and colour cosmetics analyst at marketresearch firm Mintel. They want the fragrance to be
noticed, but they dont want it to be considered too disruptive, she says. Its a Catch-22. Prada, however, prides
itself on being anything but the status quo. Prada is not
as driven by consumer testing, says Daniela Andrier of
Prada Parfums. Theres something free-spirited in its approach. It really goes for different things and has more of
an identity. Andrier is the award-winning nose responsible for many of Pradas scent supernovas, including Prada
Candy and the new launch of a range of six perfumes
called Les Infusions de Prada.
Prada first introduced the infusion concept back in
2007, when it released Infusion dIrisa sparkling floral
citrus that debuted as a captivating limited edition and
instantly became iconic. Joining its return is an unusual
and compelling group of fragrances, including Fleur
dOrange (orange blossom), Oeillet (carnation) and
Amande (almond). Each imparts a gauzy, gossamer-light
air to its wearer. You have an impression of the ingredient, but youre not overwhelmingly fragranced, says
Andrier. Theres something very subtle yet very present;
you can still smell the skin of the person wearing it.
The future of modern fragrance may include a move
toward niche perfumery, which hearkens back to the
root of perfumery and focuses on high-quality raw
materials. This collection certainly feels like an exclusive
fantasy of nonconformist notes and narratives. One of
the beautiful things about working for a house of invention and creativity like Prada is that it has such respect
and value for the story, says Andrier. Its something
people forget when making a fragrance: to tell another
story that isnt always the same.
Les Infusions de Prada Eau de Parfum Spray in Amande, Iris, Oeillet, Fleur
dOrange, Iris Cdre and Vtiver ($175 for each 100 mL bottle). For details,

RED OBSESSED
My grandmother Zehava
was a blond bombshell
who looked like she could
have been on the silver screen. She always
had her hair set just so and wore red lipstick. She definitely provided insight into the
world of glamour as I was growing up. Ive
always loved black-and-white moviesRita
Hayworth is my favourite redhead, Lauren
Bacall is my favourite brunette and Marilyn
Monroe is my favourite blonde. I thought of
the three of them as I was making these lipsticks because theyre all different in personality, so the lipsticks have different attitudes.
I always like to say Dress from the feet
up. Old Hollywood was an era of rich accessories: Women wouldnt leave the house
without their hat, gloves, shoes, matching
stockings and lipstick. When I started designing clothes, I always created the shoes,
hats and bags to go with each outfitI was
very accessories focused. At the time, I didnt
know that you could study to be a shoe designer; it had always been about creating a
head-to-toe look. For me, makeup is also an
accessory that can change an outfitwearing
red lips or a smoky eye matters.
The essence of my brand always comes
from a classic bygone era. My accessories
tend to be a bit more embellished, but when
it comes to dressing and makeup, its about
having balance. My makeup collection had
to be classic and timeless. Your shoes can
change, but the makeup stays the same.

Skincare innovations now come via sophisticated delivery systems and tweaks to gold-standard ingredients. In
Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Peel ($110), retinol meets ferulic acid, a plant-based antioxidant that boosts collagen
and cell turnover without causing redness. NeoStrata All-in-One Night Serum ($86) encapsulates retinol to allow for a faster penetration into
the deeper layers of the epidermis, says research chemist Nick Dat Ngo. It doesnt leave a [potentially irritating] accumulation of retinol on the
surface. Hyaluronic acid can visibly plump skinbut with a caveat. Delivery systems are so advanced today, says Brandon Truaxe, founder of
Deciem, a company that owns several brands, including Hylamide. Companies can make the particle sizes small enough to penetrate skin; the
challenge is how to stop them at a certain level [to deliver benefits to the right places]. Cue Hylamide Booster Low-Molecular HA ($20), which
has five different hyaluronic complexes to target varying skin depths. Rodan + Fields Redefine Acute Care Skincare for Expression Lines ($253
for 10 pairs of strips) pours hyaluronic acid into hundreds of wrinkle-smoothing microscopic liquid cones. In Philosophy The Microdelivery
Overnight Anti-Aging Peel ($89), exfoliating glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids are tempered with an echinacea-infused night cream, while
the brightening vitamin C in Neutrogena Triple Age Repair ($37) reduces the look of hyperpigmentation. For details, see Shopping Guide.

Le Teint ($64) bottles the glow of the brands highlighter as well as its Anti-Fatigue Complex to keep your skin looking alive, even when
you might not be feeling it. (Hi, Monday.) And if your skin tends to change colour a little with the seasons, theres The Body Shop Shade

threatened by everything from urbanization to global warming and might not be around to explore forever. The polar bears around Churchill,

reality of seeing them is already bittersweet. Now or never is one kind of travel I hope becomes a thing of the past. CHRISTINA REYNOLDS

die Biddle was scanning for polarbear tracks out the window of
the slow-moving Tundra Buggy
when she saw something scamper through the
willow bushes. Stop! Whats that? she called
out to fellow visitors. Buggy driver Jim Baldwin
hit the brakes, and two dozen Frontiers North
Adventures guests, cameras in hand, scrambled
to the right side of the massive vehicle to try
to catch a glimpse of the creature. Where is
it? I see it! people cried out. But Biddles
eagle eye hadnt spotted a 1,000-pound bear; it
was a 10-centimetre-long furry rodent. Now
lets find the matching fox to go with it! wisecracked Baldwin.
Like Biddle, we had all come to the frozen
landscape around Churchill, Man., to see the
great white bears. But the unexpected shrieks
of our great lemming moment, as our group
instantly christened it, temporarily eclipsed
the bears. The tiny sighting even inspired a
hashtag: After much debate, consultation with
a guidebook and laughter, we concluded that
the creature was actually a vole (because of
its long tail), not a lemming. #itsnotalemming

of visitors from as far away as Hong Kong and
CHURCHILL BOUND With a population of just 813, this northern-Manitoba community is pretty sleepyeven during peak
polar-bear season in the fall. Must-sees include
the Eskimo Museum, a cabinet-of-curiositiesstyle time warp with 1930s-, 40s- and 60sera displays showcasing ancient artifacts that
tell the stories of the Dorset, Thule and Inuit

BABY, ITS COLD OUTSIDE Its pretty fun to watch polar bears hang
out. They dont just sit around with their bums to the wind and their
noses tucked under their massive paws (although they do look pretty
cute doing just that); they sparand I actually saw fur flying! Heres
how it went down: The Tundra Buggy, which looks kind of like a
giant Mars rover, pulls up to the bears. The buggy windows (safely set
a good three metres off the ground) go down. Puffy jackets are quickly
zipped up. Cameras are positioned. The play-by-play is in full swing.
Two young males are nose to nose. Their heavy exhalations hang in
the air as they suss each other out. Soon, theyre up on their hind legs,
jostling back and forth, kicking up snow. A platter-size paw lands a
whack across the face. Nice move, someone calls out as the rest of us
Ooh and Ah and the shutter-button clicking reaches a crescendo.
Now it looks like theyre doing the tangobut its hard to tell who has
the lead. Its a great bear hug! says Steven Amstrup, chief scientist at
Polar Bears International (PBI), who has joined our excursion.
A few minutes later, the bears are again nose to nose, but this time
they are curled up together in the snow preening and flossing fur
from their mouths. They need to cool down after working up such
a sweat, says Amstrup. This might seem like curious behaviour, but
the bears were not actually in a life-and-death battle. Sparring is their
way of getting to know each otherto figure out who is dominant,
he explains. That way, when they are out on the sea ice, they already
know if its worth engaging in a high-stakes fight for food or a mate.
After eyeballing matches for almost three hours one day, we thought
we had all the moves down. But the next day, a whole new kind of
combat emerged. Its like pillow fighting, said Shephard, as a
female pair literally nuzzled and kissed each other throughout their
sparring dance. It doesnt look like the boys club, she said with a
chuckle. That said, dont underestimate the femalesthey will fiercely
fight off larger males to protect their cubs.
A beautiful morning
out on the tundra
(left); the aurora

Churchill (below)
LIGHT EM UP My last day out on the tundra began with a very early but very exciting wake-up call.
The northern lights are out! cheered Shephard as she ran through the bunkhouse around 5 a.m. I went
out on the deck and watched the swirling green bands flicker and fade and reappear in the dark, starspecked sky until the horizon ripened into vibrant tangerine and then softened into a fuchsia that made
the snowand the polar bearsglow pink. At other times, the bears had appeared icy white and creamy
yellow, so I was fascinated to learn that polar-bear fur actually has no pigment. Its the colour of ambient
lightit absorbs and reflects what is in the environmentand normal sunlight is white light, explained
Amstrup. We rushed out in our Tundra Buggy to try to capture shots of the bears in this perfect but
fleeting light. Im not sure I got good pictures, but it doesnt really matter, Sam Robbins, a 28-year-old
Australian whod made a solo voyage here to see the bears, told me. A decade ago, her mother, a teacher, had connected her classroom with this place through a PBI webcast featuring scientists who showed
off live shots of the bears. I always remembered that, and I wanted to see it first-hand, she said.
