This three-week seminar, which has been held annually for over 20 years and had
the personal support of Saint John Paul II, aims to deepen the dialogue on
Catholic social doctrine between North American students and students from the
new democracies of central and eastern Europe. It is built around an intense
study of John Paul II's 1991 encyclical Centesimus Annus, supplemented by
readings from the classics of American political theory and contemporary articles.
Participants in the Seminar came from the United States, Australia, Poland,
Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, and Slovakia.
English Summer School, Lviv, Ukraine
July 2013
ESS is a three-week intensive English immersion camp where I volunteered as a
teacher. The daily schedule included Divine Liturgy, 4-5 hours of course work
focusing on all aspects of the English language (grammar, vocabulary, reading,
writing, speaking), tutoring, and various evening activities. Student participants
were college students from Ukrainian Catholic University and seminarians from
Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv. This was an opportunity to gain experience teaching
English, to engage in cultural exchange, and to participate in the deep richness of
the Eastern Catholic tradition.
