SCIENCE UNIT PLAN

NAME: DARRELL DULALCHAN

CLASS: Form 3 Integrated Science
TOPIC: The Nature of Matter
TIME FRAME: 3 weeks

National Goals

That there will be improved scientific literacy of the smallest

particles with which all matter is made.

To have an appreciation for the nature of the particles which

make up a variety of hydrocarbon products upon which the
economy of Trinidad and Tobago is primarily based.

Big Ideas

The behaviour of matter can be understood from the premise that

matter is particulate in nature.

Commented [JH1]: Darrell you cannot improve scientific

literacy of a topic. You can improve scientific literacy
overall.

Formal Science Knowledge, Background and Experiences

Students should know / be able to:

The names of the first twenty elements of the periodic table.

Have the ability to draw cubes and arrows
Know what is a microscope
Heat energy can be absorbed and given out
Water exists in 3 states e.g. ice, water, steam.
Can state some properties of matter e.g.
Solids are hard, liquids are runny.

Aims

Possible Alternatives / Everyday Ideas

Matter is misinterpreted as court matter

Passage can be interpreted to mean taxi-fare.
Property can be a car, a house or piece of land
Sugar and salt dissolves not melt in water.

Misconceptions

Boiling and evaporation refer to the same processes

If protons are positively charged, then neutrons should be
negatively charged
Particles become more positive if they gain electrons
Diffusion requires a semi-permeable membrane
Solids are hard so they are heavy

Commented [JH2]: What is court matter? Or you matters

which are legally tried in a court of law?

General Objectives
Students should be able to:

Understand the evidence that matter is made up of particles

Appreciate that there are three states of matter that can be converted from one form to another
Be familiar with the concept of the atom as the basic building block of matter
Understand the principles for the formation of anions and cations
Understand what the different particles of matter are made up of
Understand how molecules are formed
