Mothers Day Gospel Music Offered

At Greenville Creek Christian Church

Appalachian History & Culture

Topic of May 1 Program at Garst Museum

Cant figure out how to make your moms Mothers Day extra special?
Start off the day by taking her to Greenville Creek Christian Church at 10
a.m. for some great gospel music presented by Sonshine, coming all the way
from Dallas, Oregon.
Pastor Daryl says No preaching just great gospel music!
A love offering will be accepted toward their ministry support.
The church is located at 5110 N. Buckneck Rd.

Darke County Genealogical Society, in cooperation with Ohio

Humanities, will present Appalachian History & Culture on Sunday,
May 1, 2 p.m., at the Garst Museum, 205 N. Broadway, Greenville.
Mother and daughter team Peggy Calestro and Julie CalestroMcDonald will be guest speakers. Peggy and Julie have been fascinated for more than 20 years with Central Appalachia, which includes
Appalachian Ohio. Both have written about Appalachian history and
culture and have presented at conferences and seminars. Their most
recent publication, Lost and Found in Appalachia, is a book of photos and brief narratives of some of the places theyve visited during
their extensive travel in the region. Julie is a clinical social worker at
OSU/Harding Behavioral Health and Medicine and Peggy is vice
president of the Ohio Childrens Foundation.
This presentation defines the Appalachian region and explores the
history of those who settled there. It provides insights into the origins
of Appalachian culture and beliefs, important historical events which
shaped the region, and the roles absentee ownership and extractive
industries continue to play in the region.
This presentation, which is sponsored by Ohio Humanities, is
FREE and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.

Newton FFA Winners Announced

Since October, the Newton Agricultural Food & Natural
Resources as well as the Animal and Plant classes of the FFA chapter have been working diligently on their personal Agri-Science Fair
Projects. The process began when students came up with the idea for
their project and started researching in the fall. It concluded for most
the week before Spring Break when the students turned in their final
project written report (for most this was over 15 pages) and completed an interview with a panel of judges. Each student could work
as a pair or an individual. Their projects were completely individually designed to reflect the students interest.
Division 1 Individual Freshmen Participants: Plant Systems
Winner: Nicolas Lesley; Environmental Winner: Lexi Oburn;
Division 1 Overall Winner: Lexi Oburn.
Division 2 Paired Freshmen Participants: Animal Systems:
Jalyn Hunsbarger and Alicia Dunning; Plant Systems: Bailly
Abernathy, Kasey Bowerman, and Peter McGlynn; Division 2
Overall Winner: Jalyn Hunsbarger and Alicia Dunning;
Division 3 Single Entry Upperclassmen Participants: Animal
Systems Winner: Kristen Rappold; Social Systems Winner: Kacie
Tackett; Food Science Winner: Kylee Fisher; Division 3 Overall
Winner is Kacie Tackett.
Division 4 Paired Upperclassmen Participants: Social
Systems Winners: Treanna Lavy and Caitlin Shuman; Plant Systems:
Dylan Ballard and Mason Dilbone; Environmental Winner: Nash
Lavy and Hunter Hollis; Division 4 Overall Winner: Treanna Lavy
and Caitlin Shuman. The overall Judges Choice Winner was Kristen
Rappold.
Mrs. Helsinger says of the projects, I am overwhelmingly proud
of all the students. They accomplished something they thought to be
far beyond their reach when we began in October!
Some students have chosen to take their project to State level
competition at the State FFA Convention in May. Good Luck to
Treanna Lavy, Caitlin Shuman, Kacie Tackett, Kristen Rappold, and
Lexis Oburn at the State FFA Convention.

Spring Art Exhibit Featured at BNC

A lifetime spent loving, observing, and learning about nature is reflected in the artwork of Ann Geise, whose work is being exhibited at
Brukner Nature Center through July 3.
Ann worked as artist and exhibits manager for Cincinnati Nature
Center where she illustrated and designed the center's publications and
educational exhibits. She now paints from her home studio in southwestern Ohio. Working in watercolors and oils, Ann paints subjects
ranging from local landscapes, birds, and wildlife to scenes from her
travels. The exhibit will include both originals and prints.
A portion of the sales of artwork throughout the exhibit will support
the care and husbandry of BNCs Wildlife Ambassadors. The exhibit
is free with paid admission to the Nature Center.
See more of Ann's art at www.AnnGeiseArt.com.

BNCs Big Sit Slated May 11

Tyler Henry of Covington is a resident assistant on the Residence Life staff at Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio.
Resident assistants are responsible for upholding the mission and values of the university, implementing the goals of the
residence life program, and working to develop a community
environment on their floor(s). Resident assistants are the foundation of the Residence Life Dept. and have the responsibility

Come join some intrepid Brukner Nature Center staff, Bird Club members, and volunteers on Wednesday, May 11, 6 a.m. til 6 p.m., to sit in a 17
foot circle in the parking lot and tally every bird species seen or heard from
that small island.
This annual 12-hour fundraising event is held to
share the fun and excitement of birdwatching with others, to encourage an
interest in this lifelong hobby, and to raise funds for the nature centers
Wildlife Ambassadors.
Did you know that you can see over 400 different bird species in the
state of Ohio? Come learn the call of the eastern phoebe, try out a spotting
scope, then make a pledge for each species recorded and support BNCs mission. Every penny counts, as typically over 50 species are recorded in this
one day! Pledge a $1 or pledge a penny it all adds up to help feed the nature
centers birds of prey.
BNC is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.

Return Trip Home,

Not So Good
The word quickly spread throughout the Florida trailer
park that there was a rockslide near Jellico, Tennessee, and
it was suggested we take another route back to Ohio.
I asked around, and several people told me to go north via
Interstate 65. I really dont care for Interstate 75, so the
decision to take something new sounded like good advice.

We managed to get to Route 65 with no problems. In fact,

the drive was very peaceful, and the traffic was bearable.
In fact, it was enjoyable. Everything was going along just
like wed planned, until we hit Louisville, Kentucky. We
decided to take Route 71 towards Cincinnati. Louisville is
a large city, but nothing like Atlanta, Georgia. So I thought.
The traffic was more than I could bear. At one point we
came to a complete stop. I asked Ginger to keep a sharp
eye out for signage for Route 71. When we finally reached
our exit, the ramp was closed. Traffic looked like little ants
waiting in a row to go home.
I cant take this, I announced to Ginger. Im getting off
to find a new route through Louisville.
Ill ask OnStar how we can get back on Route 71,
Ginger remarked.
After several turns and maneuvers, we ended up at the
closed exit.
Youve got to be kidding, I shouted.
What seemed like days, driving up and down the streets of
Louisville, I suddenly noticed a woman directly in front of
us waving her hands like some crazy lady. Then it dawned
on me... we were NOT on a one-way street, I was in the
lefthand lane, and she was coming straight at us!
Louisville is like Dayton. There are one-way streets every
other street. Some how, I mis-counted.

Determining the value of their service
or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer
employment but rather supply the
readers with manuals, directories and
other materials designed to help their
clients establish mail order selling and
other businesses at home. Under NO
circumstance should you send any
money in advance or give the client
your checking, license ID, or credit
card numbers. Also beware of ads that
claim to guarantee loans regardless of
credit and note that if a credit repair
company does business only over the

before delivering its service. All funds
