ENGAGE
T
eacher asks students to recall the main points of the flipped lesson as it related to Archimedes
expects
Story. S explain what they would have learned from the video as it related to the story. T
students to say that Archmides solved the crown problem by immersing it in water. S are expected
to say that was as a result of its density. T clarifies any isconc<;P..tions and tells students that
today's lesson is on density.
\. resents

to students 4 different types of soft drink in cans and asks students,

"Which of these will float or sink?" S are expected to write down their prediction on the activity
sheet. T tells students to take note that each can has the exact same volume of soft drink and are
all of the same shape and size.

EXPLORATION
T then performs the experiment and students observe what happens. S in groups record their
observations in an activity sheet.
Students in groups are then asked to explain their observations.S are expected to say that the ones
that sank were of higher mass. T then explains to students that the reason for sinking or floating
was as a result of density.

T explains to students what the definition of density is and presents students with the formula for
calculating density. T then uses an electronic balance to find the mass of each of the cans. S then
use the mass and volume of each can to calculate the density of each can. T explains that an object
will sink when its density is greater than that of the water of equal volumf."

T then asks students the question, "CAN WATER FLOAT ON WATER?" S answer the question
and share their views. T then presents students with a density tower and tells students that they
are going to use the materials provided to create a density tower. S are expected to dissolve
different amounts of sugar in similar volumes of water to create different sugar solutions of
varying densities. T guides students in their groups along the process.
EVALUATION
Students present and explain their density towers to the class. Students are then given an
evaluation sheet and asked to complete it. T then asks students to present their answers and
