Geometry (Triangles)

1. Identifying Information
Candidate: Lucas Quezada

Location:

Class/Topic: Geometry

Time: 2:00-2:30

Grade Level: 4th

Date: 03/11/16

2. Goal Students will learn how to measure angles with a protractor and learn how to find the
third angle of a triangle when two angles are known.
3. The national and/or state standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.C.6
Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measure.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.C.7
Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts,
the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and
subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical
problems, e.g., by using an equation with a symbol for the unknown angle measure.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.3
Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that
the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and
draw lines of symmetry.
4. Objective(s)
SWBAT measure various angles with a protractor
SWBAT find an angle of a triangle when two of the other angles are known.
SWBAT draw a line of symmetry through an isosceles triangle and find the angles.
5. Connections
A. Requisite skills(s) needed to develop this strategy are knowledge that triangle angles are
made up of 180 degrees total.
B. This lesson builds on previous lessons by further practicing using a protractor and adding
isosceles triangle to their knowledge of triangle measurements.
C. Students make connections between skills by adding, subtracting, and making inferences.
6. Literacy Integration
A. The language function addressed in the segment as a whole is identify measure
B. Key concepts (vocabulary terms) are: isosceles triangle, line of symmetry, right angle.
7. Formal/informal assessment Students will practice the skills and then as an exit ticket they
will answer 5 geometry problems that will be posted overhead.
8. Modifications/Accommodations/Differentiation This is the advanced group of students from
all fourth grade in the building, so there is a lot planned in order to challenge them.
9. Instructional resources and materials angles worksheet, triangles worksheet, protractors,
overhead projector.
10. Instructional strategies, the learning segment student grouping for learning, and learning
tasks
5 min: discuss respect and my expectations
5 min: practice measuring angles on a worksheet using a protractor
5 min: practice finding the third angle of triangles on a worksheet.

10 min: Teach Isosceles triangles and drawing a line of symmetry through it.
5 min: exit ticket.
