Science: Measurement Unit

1:30-2:00
Goals:

The students will begin to understand measurement that includes centimeters and inches.
The students will measure different items using centimeters and inches.
The students will learn how to estimate measurement.
The students will use a ruler to measure different items.

Purpose:
The students will understand how to measure different items in inches and centimeters
using a ruler.
Standards:
3.MD.B.4 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with
halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal
scale is marked off in appropriate unitswhole numbers, halves, or quarter
3.MD.A.2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard
units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l).15 Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to
solve onestep word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same
units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent
the problem.

Materials:
Information on the smartboard
Measurement worksheet
Assessment:
As the students are working on their worksheet I will be walking around to see how the
students are doing.
I will look over their worksheets after they turned them in so I can see how their
estimation is compared to their actual measurement number.
Differentiation:
I will work with those that are having trouble understanding how to use a ruler or having
trouble understanding how to measure something.
For those that get done early, I will have them discuss their answers with a partner.
Before:
I will start by asking the students what they know about measurement.

o I want to see how much the students know about measurement before starting the
unit.
What types of labels have you seen with measurement?
o Centimeters
o Inches
o Feet
Review the packet How to Measure
o What two types of measuring systems are there?
Show pictures on the smartboard of the labels and lengths
We will be learning how to measure using these units and labels.
Management: let students know that I will clap three times when I want them to put
everything down and listen for directions (practice)

During:
Today we will be working on measuring different objects in inches.
Hold up the ruler and ask the students what it is called.
o Show the ruler under the hover cam, point out the inches on one end and cm/mm
on the other end
Show one inch, two inch, three inches, etc.
Point out one inch is the pinch with the finger
o This will help when you estimate the length of an object
Put worksheet under the hover cam
o Demonstrate how to measure the first object with the ruler
o Have the students write an estimation and the actual measurement on their paper
as I am measuring under the hover cam
Pass out worksheets
As a class come up with ideas for other objects to measure so everyone measures the
same objects
Pass out rulers
o Before: Remind students that rulers are used to measure items and not used as
swords or used to hurt anyone (if that happens rulers wont be used anymore)
Students will work individually on this worksheet
o Its okay to talk, but whisper
Have students work on measuring their objects
After:
Once the students are finished measuring their items bring the class back together to
discuss some of the students answers
Have some of the students say what item they measured, their estimated measurement,
and then their actual measurement.
Point out how some numbers may be different because they all didnt measure the exact
same item.
Tomorrow we are going to start measuring with centimeters.
