April News from First Grade

Mrs. Leon, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Veltre & Mrs. Wemmer

Wow! We cant believe that it is
April! Our little first graders have
blossomed into almost 2nd graders!
Thank you so much for your continual
support at home. We can tell that the
students are reading and writing at
home. It is so vital to instill the love of
learning at an early age. If they are
enjoying it now, they will continue to
enjoy it forever.
Writing- We are working hard adding
describing words in sentences. Another
focus this month will be persuasive
writing. Look for these writing pieces
when they go home and discuss with
your child. One of the strands in the first
grade common core is to write legibly.
Many students need extra practice with
writing on the line with the proper use of
lower and upper case letters. Please add
this to your study routine if your child
continues to struggle.
Reading- I can not express how
wonderful it is to hear the students
reading! It is music to my ears to hear
their great progress. This
Quarter we will continue to practice
reading with enhanced fluency and
comprehension. Now that the students
can read, they must also be able to
answer questions about the story and
retell it. We will focus on verbs this
quarter as well as the main idea in a
story and paragraph.
Math We finished our learning about
fractions but please continue to talk
about fractions (halves and quarters) at
home. For the next few weeks we will
study tens and ones.

Homework- Homework is sent home on

Monday and needs to be turned in on
Friday. Some of our students are not
turning it in- please ensure that it is
completed and returned each week as we
are reinforcing skills that we are learning
in class and getting ready for 2nd grade.

Science We are beginning our study of

rocks! Students will separate earth
materials using different techniques,
explore where earth materials are found
and how they are used. We encourage
curiosity and record our findings. How
fortunate that the kids love rocks!
One change in April is that Mrs. Green
will be taking the lead teacher position in
the classroom! She has learned a lot from
Mrs. Leon about how to best support
your children over the last few weeks and
is excited to take an even bigger role in
helping them grow. Mrs. Leon will also
still be in the classroom every day
offering support and, as always, taking an
active role in helping students succeed.
Mrs. Green really enjoyed the
opportunity to contact each one of you
about this change and will continue to
keep in contact with you throughout these
four weeks. Of course, if you have any
questions, please feel free to contact Mrs.
Green or Mrs. Leon at any time.
