SCIENCE UNIT PLAN

NAME: Neerja Yadav-Dulalchan

CLASS: Form 5 Biology
TOPIC: Reproduction in Plants
TIME FRAME: 3 weeks

National Goals

Knowledge of the basic principles of Science as it impacts

on daily life.

Big Idea

Reproduction in plants is necessary for not only the continuation

of plant species but also animal species.

Formal Science Knowledge, Background and Experiences

Students should know:

that reproduction is a necessary characteristic of life.

the main parts of an insect pollinated flower.

that flowers are the organs of reproduction.

that seeds contain the young plant.

the conditions necessary for germination.

how to draw biological diagrams.

Aims

Students will be able to appreciate that reproduction in plants is

necessary for the survival of all species.

Students will be able to appreciate the role of flowers as the organ

of the plant that makes sexual reproduction possible.

Students will be able to appreciate the role of the different agents of

pollination in bringing the gametes together.

Students will be able to appreciate the role of fruits in the protection

and dispersal of seeds.

Possible Alternatives / Everyday Ideas

All plants grow from seeds.

Misconceptions

All plants produce flowers.

All flowers are large and brightly coloured

All fruits are succulent and edible.

General Objectives
Students should be able to:

Describe the two types of reproduction

Describe the typical structure of flowers.

Relate the structure of flowers to their function.

Describe the processes involved in sexual reproduction in plants.

Describe how seeds are dispersed to continue the species.
