Extended Lesson 1- April 8, 2016

1. Topic and Type: The First Five Presidents of the United States. A
lesson to present new content.
2. Content Overview: The content in this lesson will help students to
understand why Congress and the first five presidents made decisions
establishing a strong government that helped the nation grow in size
and power.
3. SOL information: Standard US1.7c The student will demonstrate knowledge of the
challenges faced by the new nation by describing the major accomplishments of the first five
presidents of the United States.
4. Instructional Objectives:
Every student will know the timeline of the first five presidents (remembering)
Every student will understand the major accomplishments and challenges faced by the first
five presidents (understanding)
Every student will be able to interpret the impact/effect the decisions made by the first five
presidents had on the course of history (analyzing)
5. Assessment Plan:
Objectives (UKDs)
U: Students will understand that the first
leaders of America made decisions that helped
to establish a strong government that helped the
nation grow in size and power.
K: First five presidents, dates of terms of each
president, their major accomplishments
(Federal court system, two-party system,
Louisiana purchase, War of 1812, annexation of
Florida, Monroe Doctrine)
D: Students will be able to interpret ideas and
events from history in a logical way.
Students will be able to sequence events that
occurred in the US during the terms of the first
five presidents.

Assessment
Formative: questioning and discussion during
note taking
Summative: foldable will be assigned for
homework on the first five presidents
Formative: prompting students with questions
and checking note taking of students to make
sure they are following along
Summative: foldable will be assigned for
homework on the first five presidents
Formative: observing students during warm up
game at the beginning of class and at the end
(if times allows) to see if students can logically
place events in sequence, exit card

6. Materials:
- Students have INB with note sheets already glued in
- Pictures of the first five presidents
- Facts about the presidents for 5 corners game
- Smartboard
- Doc camera for note taking
- Computer for Brain Pop videos
- Candy for Friday
- Entrance and exit slips for data collection
- Foldable sheets already printed to pass out to students

7. Warm Up:
Students will first fill out the pre-inventory entrance slip for data
collection. After, we will move into playing a 5 corners game to see
how much students know about the first five presidents. The pictures
of the presidents will be up on the wall and students will be given slips
(or will be read facts out loud) and will stand by that president. This will
expose students to the information that will be discussed in class and
get them moving around before taking notes.
8. Closure:
If time permits, students will play the five corners game again
now that they have the information about the presidents. The idea is
that students will be able to better place the events and
accomplishments of the presidents in logical sequence at this point.
After they will be assigned the presidents foldable for homework and
can work on it in class and/or lab. Students will also fill out the post
inventory exit slip for data collection.

notes. It makes the lesson a little
more interactive as well
