Mechanical Engineering
Studies objects and mechanisms, their designs, and how to improve upon the design
Mechanical Engineers have a shared passion of understanding the how and why things work
Not always a right solution/way to solve the problem

Mechanical Engineering Interview- Prof.

Matthew
Ohland
Professor Ohland is a professor for ENGR 132 and has masters degrees in both mechanical
and materials engineering.
He always has had a desire to understand the inner elements of objects and devices, and
the how and why behind their operation.
Recognizes that it took awhile for him to recognize himself as an engineer, and that it didnt
fully occur until his first engineering job.
Most aspects of engineering are collaborative and team based experiences.

CIT-Computer Information Technology

Unlike computer engineering which focuses on computer hardware,
and computer science which mainly deals with software and algorithm,
the study of computer information technology is based on information
systems that connect users and information management tools.

Introduction to the Practice of StatisticsSTAT

Moore. McCabe. Craig. Introduction to the practice of
statistics. 8th Edition. W. H. Freeman, 2014. Print.
Contents: This book tells about methods of accounting
data including abundant questions and figures to help
illustrate. Chapters are divided by different statistic
methods.
Preface: The preface talks about the main content of
the book, some study websites and information about
the authors.
Index/Reference: Contained at the end of the book.

CIT-Interview to Professor Raymond

Hansen
Professor Raymond Hansen hands on the networking part of CIT
department.
He used to work in several companies for building and maintaining
network systems including the servers.
Future: Since we are going to communicate with clients and provide
marketing analysis, Big Data will become very important to us.
Besides, cyber security is another rising major in CIT which will be
offered soon.

Philosophy- overview
Studies ideas from historical ideas
Textbooks are question and answer based
writings
Studies human and societal nature
Advancements are usually building off of
old works
Strong ties with religious climate
Goal is to have a better understanding of
how the world works

Philosophy Interview and Class

Interview: Professor Brower
Class: Philosophy 302: Medieval Philosophy
A survey of some of the main trends and
major figures of medieval philosophy
Professor Brower has worked at Purdue for 16 years, and has focused on
medieval and contemporary metaphysics and philosophical theology,
and most of his current research focuses in on the nature of human
beings in general. Professor Brower received his undergraduate at UC
Boulder, then his Masters as well as his Ph. D at University of Iowa,
graduating in 1996.

Human Services
Studies people and how to help them through tough times
Chronological order
Studies on people
Mainly survey studies
Discussion on topics always have controversy surrounding them
Goal is to better the lives of people

Human Services Journal Article

Rutgers, A. H., Bakermans-Kranenburg, M. J., van Ijzendoorn, M. H. and van Berckelaer-Onnes, I. A.
(2004), Autism and attachment: a meta-analytic review. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry,
45: 11231134. doi: 10.1111/j.1469-7610.2004.t01-1-00305.x
Uses statistics and a coding system to determine if there is a difference in autism and attachment.
Organized like a typical scientific paper
Uses a mix of survey and observations and experimental design.
Cant prove causation, only correlation.

Human Services Textbook/ Interview

I interviewed Cleveland Shields: He said that as a community, we are
always striving to solve problems, like engineers, but in a different way.
You solve social problems that aren't so cut and dry like engineers. And
that is why he liked the field.
Textbook: Evans, Annabel N., and Bryan J. Rooney. Methods in Psychological Research. 3rd ed.
Thousand Oaks: Sage Publications, 2013. Print.
Contents: Goes through the process of conducting research, kind of like a step by step guide.
Preface: Talks about how this is the most through textbook about research methods.
Index/ References: Index and glossary are apparent. Reference section used to cite sources
Text book contains anecdotes to show real life applications.

Pharmaceutical Sciences
Covers the basics of drug synthesis and design
Foundations in mathematics and general sciences
Leads into more advanced coursework
Goal: Develop and advance medication to help people

Pharmaceutical Sciences/Articles
Articles
Regenerative pharmacology for the treatment of acute kidney injury: Skeletal muscle
stem/progenitor cells for renal regeneration?
Targeting Mitosis in Cancer: Emerging Strategies
Targeting metabolic reprogramming as a potential therapeutic strategy in melanoma
Organized in the same way
Build off of previous research
Use diagrams to explain different processes

Pharmaceutical Sciences/Textbook
Goodman & Gilman's Manual of Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Broken into sections
Each section talks about a specific field of pharmacology
Uses a lot of Diagrams
Specific drugs and their effects on the body

Pharmaceutical Sciences/Interview
Dr. Richard M. Van Rijn
In the college of pharmacy the professors team teach
He gives lectures in
PHRM 316- Drug abuse and addiction education
PHRM 845- integrated pharmacotherapy
MCMP 544- Drug classes and mechanisms
IUSM 610- Basic principles of pharmacology and toxicology I

Despite the obvious differences between

our wide range of disciplines, each major
has the overall goal of bettering society
How?
Each field works to make advances that will make a difference in
society. Whether it is creating new technology, such as in ME and CIT,
bettering healthcare, as seen in Pharmaceutical Sciences, or
understanding humans as individuals with Human Sciences and
Philosophy, each works to make the world a better place.

How we all work together

If we were a hospital:
Mechanical engineers would design the machines and
equipment
Human Services would take care of the needs of a patient
Pharmaceutical sciences would create the medicine
Philosophy would be the chaplain
Computer information technology would be in charge of the
computer network.

Similarities and Differences between us

All majors textbooks had graphics other than philosophy.
Mechanical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Sciences explained how
things worked based upon finding while the other majors built upon
previous work by other people.
Most of our articles included the scientific method and were closely
formatted to the textbooks.
The assignments of Pharmaceutical, ME, and CIT are test based while
philosophy is essay based and human services is in the middle.
