Artifact Rational: IEP Case Study
Through the process of developing the Individualized Education
Plan (IEP) Case Study, I was able to demonstrate an understanding of
the individualized decision-making process through the initiation of the
IEP

process,

collaborative

planning

with

individuals

with

exceptionalities, families, professional colleagues, and personnel from

other agencies as appropriate, in order to develop an IEP document..
The IEP Case Study related to the Council for Exceptional Childrens
(CEC) standards 1,3,6 and 7.
CEC standard 1: Learner Development and Individual Differences
requires special education professionals to understand how
exceptionalities may interact with development and learning and
use this knowledge to provide meaningful and challenging learning
experiences for individuals with exceptionalities. This was
achieved through the development of the IEP by gaining an
understanding the students individual needs and adhering to the
accommodations set in place. By doing this I was able to identify,
assess and accommodate individuals with exceptionalities, while
providing meaningful experiences.
CEC standard 3: Curriculum Content Knowledge was met by
my background understanding of fine arts, specifically the central
concepts of proportions, structures of the discipline, and tools needed

for the mastery of self-portraiture. I was able organize this knowledge,

integrate cross-disciplinary skills, and develop meaningful learning
progressions for individuals with exceptionalities by modifying the
delivery of materials as well as the workload.
CEC standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practices.
This standard was related through my use of foundational
knowledge of the field of Visual Arts and the my professional Ethical
Principles and Practice Standards to employ special education
practice, engage in lifelong learning, and to advance the
profession. Throughout the development of this ESL, I had the
opportunity to address the goals of students IEPs. In doing this I
strived to meet the needs of the every student while providing
appropriate accommodations for students with an IEP.
CEC standard, 7: Collaboration requires special educators
to work with families, other educators, related service providers,
individuals with exceptionalities, and personnel from community
agencies in culturally

responsive ways to address the needs of

individuals with exceptionalities across a range of learning

experiences. These requirements were met through collaborations
with my mentor to creatively meet the needs of students with
exceptionalities within my classroom. Collaboration is paramount
when facing the challenge of planning lessons to meet the needs of
students with exceptionalities.

In developing the IEP Case Study, I was able to expand my

understanding of Special Education, specifically, the IEP process.
Accessing student files gave me the history and knowledge to create a
fuller picture of my student, allowing me to meet their needs in my
classroom. I learned a lot about roles of each member on the IEP team
and the paramount role played by collaboration between school and
family. With this new knowledge, I confidently look forward to attending
IEP meetings in the future.
