HIST-1700
History Repeats Itself
Does history repeat itself? In a sense, it does, but I would call it more of a rhyme. By
observing some past examples from our history we can see pretty clearly that yes, history does
tend to repeat some patterns. World War I for example was called the Great War and the War to
End All Wars. But only two decades later after WWI ended, the world was thrown into war
again, involving some of the same nations in devastating battles for much of the same territory.
The only difference this time was how much bigger and destructive that war had become since
the first World War. After WWI, socialism swept across Europe, particularly in Germany. This
led to anarchy and economic hardship, setting the stage for a leader to come along promising a
better way of life and solutions to the problems facing the population of that country. Thats
where Hitler and his Nazi party came in. As time goes by and a new generation replaces the old,
memories and concerns about the past mistakes start to fade and lessons learned seem less and
less important. That was then, this is now, is the rationale.
For many years we have been told by leading politicians and economists that the Great
Depression could never happen again. Solid safeguards were built into our economic system to
prevent the repeat of such a financial disaster. And then along came the great recession a few
years ago. Experts are now telling us that we were right on the edge and came very close to
plunging over into another depression, worse than the first one. It looks like it is only a matter of
time, we have not learned the lessons of history regarding financial restraint. Our leaders are not
following the simple, mandatory principle of not spending money we dont have.

Superpowers can also fail. The Roman Empire went on for over 500 years until it fell in
476 A.D. They were the superpower of the worlds in its day, militarily, economically and
politically. Rome was considered the Eternal City and led this powerful empire to new heights
of grandeur and fame. It was unthinkable that the Roman Empire would ever fall. But it did fall.
Is history repeating itself with todays world superpower, the United States of America? One
would think so seeing how America is now in decline just as Rome was in its last years. The core
causes of the Roman Empires fall are the same core causes of Americas decline. We are living
in very sobering and serious times. Its in our favor to remember the lessons of history, or we risk
repeating them again in our lifetime.
