Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Form 1
Observation Date: 3-11-2016

Observation Time: 10:00 a.m.

Teacher Observed: Hakan Yanar

Subject/Grade Level: Algebra/ 9th Grade

School Observed: Albuquerque School of Excellence Observer: Baymuhammet Dadebayev

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS 111.4. Grade 2.b.)
A-REI.B.4 Solve quadratic equations in one variable. Objectives were on the board also.
1. Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equations.
2. Solve quadratic equations by inspection, taking square roots, completing the square, the
quadratic formula and factoring.
2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?
Teacher started lesson by taking attendance while students were doing bellwork/ warm up
questions. After 10 minutes teacher asked some questions related what they learned, brief review
then introduced new topic. Lectured for 15 minutes and then students did practice. He ended
lesson by summarizing todays topic and telling them what they learn next lesson.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?
Text book, Notebook, Mimio pad, White board.
4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc)
The method he used was kind of blending lecture method and group work. While he was
explaining new topic it was going with questioning techniques, then when students started
practicing they worked in a group of 3 students helped each other and tried to show their work on
the board.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, openended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods
Teacher used formal assessment method to check students understanding. He asked oral
questions to each group member and asked questions how did they find these solutions and gave
feedback.
6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)
From my observation, I can say that teachers style blending traditional with student centered. He
also uses a lot of technology and can freely walk in the classroom while he is using. He always
tries to involve students as much he can. I saw that sometimes students use mimio pad to show
their work which I saw they like it.
7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?
I observed that in Mr. Yanars class rules became routines for students, He walks in the classroom,
and goes close to students if they are talking and off task, asking them questions whose off task
and brings then on task. Because he was asking questions randomly all students were paying
attentions. He always asked questions to check students understanding.
8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when offtask. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?
Behaviors occurred especially when they doing group work. Sometimes they got off the task
started talking about what happened yesterday at home or some other place, Teacher immediately
informed them to continue working on their task by going closer to them and asking if they are
done and if they want to show their work.
9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)
He used different communication, sometimes he used verbal and sometimes he just used facial.
And as I mentioned above he used space like he stood closer to student when they where off task.
10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)
There were 17 students, 10 girls and 7 boys. The class was pretty much diverse in terms of
ethnicity. They sat in a group of 3 students. I think teacher made a heterogeneous group so they
can help each other. I did not see any major attitude problem except talking sometimes.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?
Starting class with bellwork, reviewing last class topics, moving around class while lecturing,
blending traditional teaching style with student centered and blending technology, Questioning
techniques.
12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?
For me as a Computer teacher I dont think I can use exact same instructional strategies as Mr.
Yanars, but I liked his way of questioning technique to engage students, which I was not using
in my class also Group work. I did not use group work before in the computer class but after this
observation I started really thinking on that because I saw student engagement.
13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?
I think putting objectives on the board or on the place where they can see and mentioning about
them at the beginning of the introduction to new topic was really beneficial to students and I
think I will use that in my class. Another classroom management strategy I observed is trying to
engage all students even they are not participating reluctantly. I was always letting to answer my
questions to students who were raising their hands. I will try to communicate with all as much as
possible.
