ForthesemesterlongprojectourgrouphaschosenthetopicoftheUniversityofNorth
CarolinaatCharlotte.Thedifferencebetweenthecampusphysical,social,andeconomicstatus
from1949to2016hasdrasticallychanged.FromourfirstChancellorDeanColvardto
ChancellorDubois,ourgroupwantstoreviewthechanges.Thisisabroadtopicbutwewill
dedicateourresearchandinquirytohistoricalcontent,logisticsofUNCCharlotte,studentlife,
professorinvolvement,andhowUNCCharlotteaffectstheCharlotteareaasawhole.Within
thesetopicstherewillbesubtopicsforexample,withstudentlifewewillincludeinvolvement
oncampus,residencelife,andactivitiesoncampus.Ourgroupalsowantstoseetheeffectthat
UNCCharlottehasonthecityofCharlotteitself.HowmanypeoplefromCharlotteactually
commute?Whatstatesandcountriesdowerepresent?WewillalsolookatthefounderBonnie
E.ConeandherreasoningforchoosingCharlotte,aswellasthegrowthofthecampusasa
whole.
OurmultimodalprojectwillbebasedaroundthedevelopmentoftheUNCCharlotte
campusandtheUNCschoolsystem.Withinthisparticulartopic,therearealotofdifferent
topicsandsubtopicsweareabletodiscussinordertoconveyavividunderstandingtoour
audience.Wewillgointodetailaboutthefoundingofthecollege,itsgrowthasapartofthe
NorthCarolinaSchoolsystem,thecurrentprojectsthatarebeingdeveloped,andthediversityof

thestudentbodyandstudentlife.WewillbeusingPrezitopresentourfindingsvisuallyusing
aerialimagesoftheschooltoshowphysicalchangesonourcampus.Inourpreziwewillbe
displayingvariousvisualaidsincludingvideos,pictures,charts,andtablesasawaytokeepthe
audienceengagedinourpresentation.
UNCCharlottewasoneoftheseveraluniversitiesfoundedintheCharlottemetropolitan
areaimmediatelyfollowingWorldWarII.Ourbeloveduniversitywasfoundedontheresponse
andinspirationtocontinueeducationwhichwasgeneratedbythewaranditstechnology.In
1946,thestateofNorthCarolinaopenedtheCharlotteCenterwithanenrollmentof278
students,wehavegrowntremendouslysincethen.Onlythreeyearswentbyandthestatebegan
toclosethesepostWorldWarIIcenters.TheCharlotteCenterwasthentakenoverbythecity
schooldistrictandbecameCharlotteCollege,atwoyearinstitution.In1965webecameapartof
theNorthCarolinaschoolsystemmakingustheuniversitywearetoday.Forourpresentation,
wewillbuildonthishistoricalcontentandalsoincludethehistorywearemakingtoday.
Logistically,ourcampushasincreasedtremendouslyinthelastsixyears,andbelieveit
ornot,wearestillgrowingeveryyear.Asawhole,ourgroupwillbetalkingaboutthegrowth
ofUNCCharlotte.Alongwiththissubjectspecifically,wewillcoverthechangesintuition,
renovationsandexpansionsofthecampusanddorms,aswellasthestudenttoprofessorratios.
FocusingagoodamountonthelogisticsofUNCCharlottewilldoourgroupagreatdealof
successbecauseitbasicallycoverseverythingthatweneedforouraudiencetoknow.More
specifically,whenwetalkabouttherenovationsandexpansions,wehavealsoconsideredtalking
aboutthenewBelkplaza,therenovationsoftheolddorms(Scott,Moore,etc.),aswellasthe

expansionofthenewroadsandthelightrailsystem.Therearealotofthingsthatwearegoing
tocoverinourprojectthatwillprovideouraudiencewithalotofhelpfulandfunfacts.
Thegrowthofthecampusisalsoseeninthestudentlife.Thereareover300clubsand
organizationstoparticipateinoncampusbothacademicandrecreationalaswellasathriving
Greeklife.Withnearly20residencehallsandmoreontheway,aswellasanabundanceof
apartmentsrightacrossthestreet,UNCCharlotteisbecominglessandlessofacommuter
school.Studentscanchoosebetweentraditional,suite,andevenapartmentstyleoncampus
housing.Whentheywanttoheadoffcampus,oncethelightrailiscompleteitwillbeashorttrip
uptown.Howevercurrently,transportationforstudentsisjustashortuberrideawayfrom
anywhereuptown,fromnightlifetoaHornetsgame,within15minutes.
Aswehavealreadydiscussedaboutthestudentlifeinthepreviousparagraph,ournext
topicwouldbetheprofessor'ssideofthingsincludingthepopularmajors,minors,andwhat
theybelieveshouldbethefutureofUNCCharlotte.Ourgroupisundertheimpressionthat
UNCCharlotteisthe2ndlargestproducerofteachersinthestateofNorthCarolinawiththat
beingsaid,educationmajors(specialeducation,secondaryandelementaryeducation)wouldbe
someofthemorepopularsmajorshereonourcampus.Ourprojectwillgoontodiscusswhy
thesemajorsaresopopular,isittheprofessors?Hasourprogramgrownsincebeingapartofthe
UNCsystemandwhyisthat?
UNCCharlottecameintoexistencein1946asaschoolthatcameaboutasaresultofthe
GIBillforreturningveterans.However,theschoolhascreatedahugeimpactontheCharlotte
Metropolitanarea,withanestimated$2.1Billiondollarimmediateeconomicimpact.Asaresult
itmakesalltherenovationsworthitbecauseastheschoolexpandssowillthejobopportunities

andemploymentoptions,itwillfeedintothelocalareaofCharlotte.Notonlyistheschool
becomingmorecompetitivebutithaslaiditselfdownwithmanycompetitiveprograms
includingtheBelkCollegeofBusiness.UNCCharlottehasacurrentenrollmentofabout28,000
pupilsbutplantoaddatleastanother10,000inthenextdecadeorso.Inaddition,theLightRail
willcreateanimmediateimpactandallowstudentstolearntheCharlotteareaevenbetterasit
willbeaccessiblefromthecampus.Theschoolalsoplanstoaddamedicalandlawschoolto
itsalreadygrowingarsenalofschools.UNCCharlotteisrapidlybecomingakeypieceofthe
CharlotteMetropolitanareaandthiscanbeseenthroughtheamountofjobsitsprovidesthearea
andthesocioeconomicimpactitholds.
Sincethisisasemesterlongproject,theexpectationforrolesandresponsibilitiesofthe
grouparesethigh.Eachpersonisresponsiblefortheirownareaofresearch,thatincludes
everythingwithinthattopic.Forexample,KaylahstopicishistoricalcontentaboutUNC
Charlotte,sothatincludeswhyUNCCharlottefirstbegan,whywerecalledthe49ers,whois
BonnieCone,etc.Eachgroupmemberisexpectedtosticktodeadlinessetbythegroup,attend
allmeetings,andcommunicateeffectivelywithinthegroup.Thisprojectisagroupeffort,sothe
workweproduceshouldbecollaborative,meaningtheworkweputinshouldbeshownthrough
thefinalproduct.
Asfarasthetimelinegoes,wehavemajordatesthatwewanttofocuson
includingtheproposal,peerreviewandfinalduedatefortheannotatedbibliography,andof
coursethepresentationdateforthisproject.Mostofthemajordatesarelistedonthesyllabus
butwehavedecidedtoincludemoredatestostayontrackwithproject.Asapartofthis
semesterlongprojecteachgroupmembermustfindtensourcesfortheirgivensubtopic,weplan

tomeetonMondayMarch14thtopeerrevieweachannotatedbibliographytoturninduring
classonthatTuesday.ForthefollowingweekweplantomeetonMondayMarch21stto
continuecreatingthePrezithathasalreadybeencreatedanddiscussourdesignfeaturesand
whatmodeswewillbeusingduringtheproject.EveryotherMondayfollowingthatweekwe
havedecidedtomeettopracticeforthepresentationtomakesurewehaveaclearunderstanding
ofourtopic.ForthePreziwewanttomakeitinterestingtolearnaboutourownschoolandwhat
istocome.EachgroupmemeberisresponsibleforcompletingtheirownsectionforthePrezi
whichmustbedoneonApril21st.Thenasagroupwewillmeettocritiqueandfixany
grammaticalorvisualissuestomakeourprojectmoreappealingandunderstandableforour
audience.
Althoughthisisagroupproject,eachgroupmemberhastheirownspecificsubtopics
withinUNCCharlottesoitisuptothemtoresearchontheirowntimeandbringtheir
informationforwardduringourmeetings.Ourgroupisexcitedtotakeonthechallengeofour
ownschool,hopefullywewillfindmoreinformationthanweareproposingthroughoutthe
semester.Welookforwardtopresentingourinformationtoeveryone.
