My favorite class by far.

Here are notes of all the things I learned about language

acquisition. Im currently pursuing the ESOL endorsement and love working with
ELLS.
1. Is Languages are learned mainly through imitation?
Universal Grammarist-NO (Chompsky the Linguist)
Behaviorist ModelInteraction theorist believe interaction is necessary (vogotsky those guys)
2. Highly intelligent people are good language learners.
This is false. How do we define intelligence? Immersion in the culture is most
important. People who are good at puzzles, they also do well on certain vocabulary
type tests. The idea of language competence can you or can you not use it.
3. The best predictor of language learning success is learner motivation.
No. We do know motivation is extremely important. The more you try the
more youre going to improve. No matter how motivated you are there are
different.
kinds of motivation
Intrinsic motivation- it pretty, instrumental I have to I will get a better job.
Integrative motivation- I want to be like them
4. The earlier second languages are introduced in school, the greater the
success students will have in L2 learning.
The caveat: research shows it depends on what you are talking about when
you say learning and success. Students have a tendency to pronounce better
than adults. Adults and older children begin to learn other strategies that are
not only acquisition they use analytical skills.
5. Most of the errors that leaners make in their L2 are due to interference from
their L1.
There is some. Not much research on it yet. We do know in certain languages like
Spanish and mandarin that these students will leave our pronounces and tenses
because their languages do not incorporate these.
6. Learners errors should be corrected immediately in order to prevent them
from becoming habits.
Cognitive Interactionist Theory- they have to be able to notice to learn. It has to be
an age appropriate level. If they are not ready to notice, they wont!
7. When learners are able to interact freely with each other L2 leaners (such as
group work) they learn each others mistakes.

Foundational theories from Stephen Krashen (pioneer in second language

acquisition) Affective filter-you have to have a low affective filter in order to learn.
