Assess How/Using what tool?


Formatively assess during instruction by hand
signals, and have students draw and label a diagram
of the United States of America to turn in for teacher
to review.
Teacher observation of mastery during interactive
game.
Formative: Student reflection in journals at the end
of the lesson. Helps to decide what to review and
what to teach the next day.
Participation in class discussion while showing
engagement in topic. (Use class discussion rubric to
assess participation) [SW] also create their own logo
to symbolize something they would want future
generations to see; teacher will assess upon
completion of assignment
Using a fist of five during instruction to show
understanding of content. Persuasive letter used to
show understanding of the benefits of national parks
to our society.
Completion of online survey, active participation in

Use rubric to evaluate presentations of research
project. Teacher will walk around the room to monitor
progress during lesson.

After Instruction
1) Informal Assessment Ranger Journals: students will respond and reflect
in their journal at the end of each lesson. Teacher will use this information to
assess understanding of content. Graphic Organizers: students will draw
and label various diagrams to show understanding.
2) Traditional/Formal Assessment Paper-Pencil Test: students will create
their own national park using the criteria established. This test will be in the
form of short answers for students to briefly explain how their national park
would address each particular topic. (final assessment)
3) Authentic Assessment National Park Research Fair: students will pick a
National Park, research about various criteria, and create an original
presentation. Presentations will be viewed in a Science Fair model. Exit
Tickets: students will respond to various prompts and turn them into the
teacher in order to exit the class.
4) Portfolio Persuasive Letter, Logo creation: will be displayed on the
focal wall of the classroom for reference throughout the unit.
Overall Evaluation of Lesson Unit Engagement: I will monitor my students engagement in the activities
of the lesson. If students seem to be willing participants in the
activities, I will consider teaching this unit again.
Assignment Completion: I will grade my students work based on an
agreed upon set of criteria, if the overall majority of student do well on
the assignments I will consider the unit a success.
Relevancy to Students Lives: If my future students seem interested
in the topic, I will be more apt to teach this lesson again. I do not want
to teach this content if my students will not find it interesting. There
will always be other ways I could cover this material.
