ORGANIZING AUTHOR EVENTS

Collaborate with at least one other
author, if not several, Friedman says.
This increases turnout for everyone, and
also is a good networking move.
If authors can connect events to larger
conferences taking place, all the better.
Even if going solo with a reading, authors
should select venues that have their own
built-in audiences. For example, a new
bar in town that allows an author to
hostan event prior to its officialopening
might help entice visitors who want to
be the first to check it out.
The key to a successful event is lining
up partner organizations that have as
much to gain from a good turnout as you
do, says Alina Adams, author of the book
Getting into NYC Kindergarten, published
last April. She hosts workshops on navigating New Yorks
school application
system at local
businesses that are

I might not have otherwise, she says.
Unconventional venues and events are
worth considering. For example, indie
author Pamela Triolo connected with the
Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market for
an event at which she signed her book,
Death Without Cause, donating 10% back
to the ballet.
The event was in the evening, many
people attended, they had the means to
purchase books, and it was a cause I
believed in, Triolo says. The volunteers
did all of the promotion and promoted
the event in Houston through the news.
Book clubs are also worth pursuing, as
they provide engaged and vocal potential
fans. Triolo, who is a registered nurse,
will be taking part in book clubs at two
Canadian universities during National
Nursing Week in May.
The group is buying the books, and I

will create customized bookplates that I

autograph to each individual who buys a
book, Triolo says. Ill send them the
bookplates.
As with book promotion in general,
authors can boost interest in their events
by offering some kind of giveaway or
freebie. While a signed book might be
enough to entice readers, more than
likely a little something more may be
needed. That can mean giving away a free
book or e-book (if promoting books in a
series, consider offering the previous
entry in the series for free to whoever
buys the new title), freebies like bookmarks or stickers, or just wine and snacks
(depending on the venues policy).
Authors can also consider raffling off
larger gift baskets or prizes.

Generate Wider Interest

In addition to drawing their own crowds

through social media and other outlets,
authors can help attract greater interest
in their events through local press outlets. These include free papers that cover
readings or leisure activities, as well as
blogs about books or local events. Many
offer print or online event calendars.
Press coverage can be challenging
unless you truly have something newsworthy about you, the event, and the
book, Hutchins says. She was able to
generate media interest through a largescale bookstore tour that took her
through 38 states in 60 days in an RV
but had less luck generating interest in

Hutchins at the Mount Enterprise Library Book

Club

larger cities, such as Houston, than in

smaller locales. The smaller the community, the more likely you are to get the
coverage, she says.

To get the word out,

authors can directly email
press contacts they find
through online searches or use services
such as Cision, which can provide media
contacts for a fee. Authors may also consider drafting press releases about their
books or events and sending them to editors or posting them on services such as
PRWeb. Whatever approach they use,
authors should try to identify what editors
might find newsworthy and lead with
that. For example, a press release for an
event about a romance book in January or
February could focus on Valentines Day.
Timing is key, says Samuella Becker,
CEO and founder of TigressPR, who has
represented a number of indie authors and
previously worked as director of corporate
relations at Simon & Schuster. With the
presidential election later this fall, those
who can give an insiders perspective of
what goes on behind the scenes and have
justwritten about it would be a draw.
Authors who have trouble receiving
media attention can always consider
buying it. A small ad in the local papers
book review section or online may be
worth the investment. This is particularly
true if authors can use these ads to promote
their events and books at the same time, so
that those who cant make an event might
consider picking up the book.
This points to the longer-term value of
author events: they are an investment of
time, energy, and often money, so authors
should be sure to get as much out of them
as possible. In addition to promoting their
books and events in advertisements and
press outlets, authors should try to get
venues to put up posters or fliers ahead of
time to help increase the visibility of their
books. At events, authors should try to
collect the email addresses of attendees to
add to them to their mailing lists and/or
encourage visitors to follow them on social
media accounts if they dont already.
I look at an event as a chance to create
the impression even with people who do
not come, Hutchins says. I want to get
as many impressions of my book title, the
cover, and my name as I can out of an
event.

INDIE SUCCESS

Dracula Goes Indie

Self-published author on board for Dracula prequel
By Jennifer McCartney

fter an aborted trip to

Stephen Kings vacation
house, a successful indie
thriller, and a subsequent
B r a m S t o k e r Aw a r d
nomination, author J.D. Barkers career
is only getting more unusual: the writer
has been tapped to coauthor a prequel to
Dracula with Dacre Stoker, Bram Stokers
great-grandnephew. Ive received over
500 emails and messages on social media
telling me not to flub this up, Barker
says. Its extremely daunting. While he
cant reveal any spoilers, Barker says
theyve created a bookwith the
blessing of the family estatethat Bram
Stoker would be proud of. But how did
a relatively unknown indie author end up
cowriting a prequel to one of the worlds
most popular novels?
It began when the pair met at the
Bram Stoker Awards in May 2015.
Barkers Forsaken was a finalist for the
award for best first novel, and
Stoker was a presenter. I gave
him a copy of Forsaken, and we
parted ways an hour or so later,
Barker says. Stoker read the
book and liked it, and got in
touch to ask whether Barker
would be interested in coauthoring a Dracula prequel.
(Stoker had previously written
the authorized Dracula sequel, Dracula
the Un-dead.) At that point, Barker
says, I checked the room for cameras and
waited for Ashton Kutcher to jump out
to tell me I had been Punkd. When he
realized the offer was genuine, he
accepted, and the pair got down to work.
Barker began his career writing for outlets like Teen Beat and Seventeen, interviewing Debbie Gibson, Bon Jovi, New
Kids on the Block, and others. He also

worked alongside Brian

Warner, the man who would
later become Marilyn
Manson, at a magazine called
25th Parallel. After realizing
that journalism wasnt for
him, Barker rediscovered his
love of fiction and began
working toward writing and
eventually publishing his J.D. Barker
first novelthe story of a
successful horror author who writes a disturbing tale of a 16th-century girl on trial
for witchcraft. He sent hundreds of query
letters to agents but became discouraged
by the lack of response. I knew I had a
good story, but I couldnt get a single
person to take a look at it, let alone get me
in front of a publisher, he says. I decided
I might be better off proving myself on
the indie path and approaching the publishers down the road with a strong track
record behind me. Forsaken has attracted
a loyal following since its release
in November 2014. Ive
received drawings of the characters from all around the world,
Barker says. One reader in the
U.K. painted a picture of one of
the monsters on glass. Forsaken
reached the top 100 bestseller
list on Amazon in the U.S. and
U.K. and the #1 spot on Amazon
Canada. It also hit the #2 spot on Audible.
I got stuck behind Harper Lees Go Set a
Watchman, Barker says.
It probably also helps that the book
has a tangential connection to King: one
of Barkers characters buys a journal
from a Mr. Leland Gaunt at an antique
store called Needful Thingsa reference recognizable to fans of the King
book of the same name. After an aborted
attempt to show up at the doorstep of

50 P U B L I S H E R S W E E K L Y M A R C H 2 8 , 2 0 1 6

Kings Florida vacation

home to ask permission for
the reference (fear of snipers
turned him back), he
decided to email Kings
assistant instead. A quick
exchange confirmed that
King was fine with this. To
this day, Im afraid to check
my email for fear of finding
a reversal, Barker says.
The prospect of creating the prequel
poses the biggest challenge for Barker.
Draculahas fans worldwide, and to
many peoplemyself includedthe
book is sacred ground, he says. For their
background research, he and Stoker met
to investigate a trunk full of Bram Stokers
personal paperseverything from maps
and receipts to diaries collected from the
famous authors family members over the
years. Parts of Dracula were actually
written in a daily planner, and [Dacre]
had copies on hand, Barker says. Bram
Stokers revisions to his famous book are
evident as Dracula finally replaces the
authors original name for the character,
Count Wampyr, in the various drafts.
Its impossible to see this and not picture
Bram at the moment his legendary character was born, Barker says. Amid all the
papers, an idea for the prequel began to
take shape. As I dove into his notes, I
quickly realized Bram fully believed
vampires were real, Barker says. Our
novel explains why.
Barker advises fans that the best place
to keep up to date on the project is draculabegins.com. Once the final draft is
complete, the plan is to shop it to traditional publishers. In the meantime, he is
also working on his next novel, a suspense/thriller crossover set in Chicago

called The Fourth Monkey.

How to Sell More E-books

Giving away e-books can boost sales for indie authors
By Mark Coker

o you want to sell more books and

increase the value of your author
brand? Then give some of your
e-books away for free.
To many authors, the idea of
giving their work away for free is counterintuitiveand possibly abhorrent and sacrilegious. Free
devalues your work, right?
Wrong. Free makes your work more valuable. As
an author, you are a brand. Readers buy books from
authors who have earned their trust. But to earn
readers trust, you must first earn their awareness. If readers
dont know you, they cant trust youyour brand carries no
value to them. Youre invisible. Even if youre already a New
York Times bestseller, there are millions of potential readers out
there who have never heard of you and have never read your stuff.
Free makes it possible to reach new readers who would otherwise never take a chance on you. Free enables readers to sample
and discover new authors without financial risk.
According to the 2015 Smashwords Survey, free e-books get
41 times more downloads on average than other e-books. This
is the power of free. Free drives sampling and discovery.
Its like trying a free sample of cheese at the grocery store.
You try it because its free and you like cheese. Once you taste
something you love, you want more of it. Some percentage of
the tasters become paying customers. Unlike with sample bites
of food, readers must sample your entire book to appreciate the
full flavor of your luscious literary genius. Partial samples are
inadequate. Give them a free meal and then hook them with
your awesome sauce.
Free works especially well for series
starters. At Smashwords, we found
that series in which the first book is
free earn authors about 67% more
income on average than other series.
One of the early indie pioneers of
free series starters was Brian S. Pratt,
a Smashwords author who writes epic
fantasy. In 2009, he offered The
Unsuspecting Mage, book one in his
seven-book Morcyth Saga series, for
free. The series starter is over 140,000

words, and by the time many of his readers finished

it, they were hooked. Some loved Brians writing
so much that they bought the next six books in the
series, sight unseen, for $5.95 each. Thats trust.
By offering his series starter for free, Brian made
his writing more discoverable, more accessible,
more desirable, and more valuable to readers.
Despite the proven power of free series starters,
few traditional publishers take advantage of the
idea. This means that, for the time being at least,
the power of free is the sole domain of indie authors.
Exploit this advantage while you have it.
Free is no guarantee of bestsellerdom. Theres a glut of highquality free books. At Smashwords alone, weve published
more than 60,000 free books. The competition for reader eyeballs is fierce.
Free works best in the hands of a skilled writer. Your freebie
must be a super-awesome book. Good is not good enough. A
mediocre freebie will drive no more conversions to paid readers
than a sample of rancid cheese will motivate a grocery store
purchase. Longer freebies work better than shorter freebies
because the longer the book, the more trust-building time the
reader spends immersed in your writing.
Free can work well for standalone titles, too, because once you
earn the readers awareness and love, theyll seek out your other
books. And, even if youll only ever publish one book, free can
still work as a temporary promotional tool to ramp up readership,
generate word of mouth, and establish your first retailer reviews.
All major e-book retailers allow free e-books. Amazon supports free but with caveats. If youre in its KDP Select program,
which requires exclusivity (boo, hiss!), you can only offer your
e-book for free for up to five days per quarter. But this isnt
enough time to gain the full advantage of free.
To make free work, you want permafree, meaning that your
book is free for weeks, months, or years. The best way to do this
at Amazon is to opt out of KDP Select, distribute the book
everywhere for free, and wait for the Amazon bots to
price-match.
Free deserves a spot in your best-practices toolkit. Give it

a try!

Fiction
The Alchemist in the Attic
Antonio Urias. Antonio Urias, $2.99 e-book
(201p) ASIN B0194D3LOA

The end of the 19th century has

brought reporter Theodore Teddy
Atwood and his newspaper, the San
Francisco Oracle, to the edge of ruin. What
Teddy needs to survive is a fantastic story
with at least a grain of truthand he
thinks he may have it when two notorious
grave robbers return to the city. But they
and the citys other grave robbers are only
the first step down a dark path leading to
murders and a patron who scares even
them to silence. Teddy believes that a
mysterious recluse named Marius
Valencourt is the malefactor, and
Valencourts tight-lipped neighbors
appear to agree. Pursuing Valencourt
throws Teddy headfirst against an arcane
power that kills
some and drives
others insane.
Urias keeps the
pace quick and
ramps up the pressure on Teddy,
making for a
gritty, breathless,
sometimes bewildering tale in
which financial ruin often seems the best
of Teddys possible dooms. If the sum of
the secrets feels somewhat anticlimactic
and well trod, readers will have an
exciting ride getting there nevertheless.

The Chimera Sequence

Elliott Garber. Osprey, $24.99 hardcover
(390p) ISBN 978-1-943968-01-5

Garber puts his experience as a veterinarian and military officer to good use in
this decent bio-thriller. While on a visit
to Virunga National Park in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, wildlife vet Cole McBride and his team are
eager to check on the status of the three

mountain gorilla families living in the

preserve. To Coles horror, most of the apes
are dead, from a mysterious illness that
has left their
corpses covered
with lesions. The
deaths become
even more frightening when the
unknown disease
begins to infect
humans.
Meanwhile, U.S.
president David
Rogers is hoping that he can avoid the
mistakes of George W. Bush in handling a
mega-storm, a natural disaster that shifts
his focus away from conflict over rare
mineral deposits in Africa. In addition, an
American Muslim disturbed by U.S.
policy in the Middle East finds himself
caught up in a terror plot. Coincidence
plays a large role, but Garber has a gift for
keeping readers guessing what will
happen next.

The Commons, Book 1:

The Journeyman
Michael Alan Peck. Dinuhos Arts, $19.95
trade paper (315p) ISBN 978-0-9860823-1-3

Peck weaves a concept of the afterlife

thats equal parts action and allegory into
this intense debut novel. Seventeenyear-old Paul, fleeing poverty in New
York City and seeking his identity in San
Francisco, boards a bus with Iraq War veteran Annie and
her young son,
Zach. When their
bus crashes, all
three are sent to
the Commons, a
realm between life
and death where
souls go on journeys to determine
their ultimate
fate. But thanks to the Ravagers and their
leader, Mr. Brill, the Commons is in disarray, controlled by their sinister corpora-

tion. Paul must embark on a journey of

his own to save the most vital part of
reality. Pecks message couldnt be clearer
in his depiction of Brills perverse business
machinations, which destroy lives in order
to ensure his continued grasp on ultimate
power in an obvious metaphor for
America in an era of barely checked capitalism. Peck also distinguishes himself
with the creation of Zach, a neuroatypical
character whose contributions do not
come in spite of being autistic, but
because of it. That success, plus scenes of
intense action and fantastical creativity,
make Peck an author to watch.

The Cook Out

Pat Riley. CreateSpace, $12 trade paper
(322p) ISBN 978-1-507875-81-0

This taut thriller from Riley (Executive

Deception) provides a moving look at the
human toll of the Iraq and Afghan wars.
Bobby Schrader, who was wounded in
Iraq, lies dying in a hospital bed in
Landstuhl,
Germany. In
Hope Mills, N.C.,
news of his injuries reaches his
parents, Joanna
and Robert.
When they arrive
in Europe, Joanna
and Robert learn
that Bobby died
before they were informed he was injured.
Another pair of bereaved parents begins to
plot revenge against the leaders who sent
soldiers into battle unprepared.
Meanwhile, Raleigh journalist Rudy
Ryan has been assigned to write about all
the North Carolinians who died in Iraq,
and he begins traveling the country, collecting sad and infuriating stories. His
research keeps expanding, and he comes
to believe that the war has had a broad
negative impact on American society.
Riley balances the two story lines nicely,
building up to a genuinely surprising
resolution.

REVIEWS
Entromancy
M.S. Farzan. Nightpath, $9.99
trade paper (258p) ISBN 978-0692-56384-7

According to the clunky exposition in

this first of a projected trilogy, set on nearfuture Earth, humankind has somehow
rediscovered a previously depleted element, ceridium, the axis upon which all
magic revolved. Its emergence leads to
the birth of a variety of long-eared,
tusked, horned, or pig-snouted children
known as aurics. Oddly, neither the magic
of ceridium nor its link to aurics seems
crucial to what is in essence a conventional adventure story. Law enforcement
agent Eskander Aradowski has some magical prowess of his own, suspects one conspiracy is afoot, learns of another, and,
along with a motley collection of fellow
heroes and a few healthy doses of derringdo, saves the day. The narrator occasionally references tension between aurics and
humans, but readers generally see cooperation between
them, and the ill
will between their
respective governments is detached
from any racial
animus. Eskander
and other characters are armed
with ceridium
rifles, bullets, and
spears, but there seems to be little difference between these and more traditional
weapons. Genre fans will be disappointed
by the storys lack of real innovation.

The Flying Dragon

Georges Ugeux. Archway, $14.99 trade paper
(190p) ISBN 978-1-4808-1856-9

Former New York Stock Exchange

executive Ugeux makes good use of his
expertise in international finance in
crafting this suspenseful whodunit.
Victoria Leung, who has left the financial
fraud department of the Hong Kong
Police Force, now provides her analytic
insights to Pegasus, an international private investigations firm. Shes plunged
into a complex case when a former colleague, Diana Yu, asks her to look into a
suspicious suicide. Bertrand Wellington,
the head of derivatives at the Bank of

Hong Kong and Shanghai, fell to his

death, but Diana believes that, at the
least, he was goaded into doing so.
Bertrand had been
sexually harassed
by a supervisor,
David Chen, who
was also in the
habit of executing
illegal stock
trades that commingled the
banks activities
with those of its
clients. Victoria soon comes to adopt
Dianas theory that Bertrand was murdered. Ugeux enhances the thriller plot
line with insights into Hong Kongs
treatment of sex crimes and the political
control China maintains over the island.

Kate Bradley, a plainspoken and strong

willed reporter for the Los Angeles

Graveyard Shift

paper (259p) ISBN 978-1-4800-0418-4

Roquet breathes new life into death

with the debut of her Reapers, Inc. urban
fantasy series. Lana Harvey is an eighthgeneration reaper, content with harvesting low-risk souls on a freelance basis.
She gets her docket in the morning, heads
over to the mortal realm to pick her passengers up, and
then takes them
back to her ship in
Limbo City. Every
afternoon, she and
her sailing partner
drop their souls
off in the respective afterlives. At
night, she enjoys
poker games with
her friends, including the angel Gabriel,
and spends countless hours warming a
stool at the demon-run Purgatory Lounge.
Lanas quite content with her life until
shes chosen by Grim, the CEO of
Reapers, Inc., to help quell an insurrection threatening to destroy the fabric of
Eternity. The blending of cultures and
traditions is handled respectfully, with
more than a touch of humor mixed in
with hints of romance and mystery. The

something for fans of several different
genres.

Key Change

check, missed voice mails, and a fed-up
ex-boyfriend leave Sara homeless and
Andrew living in what used to be her
apartment. Needing a place to stay, Sara
agrees to move in with Andrew for six
weeks in exchange for being part of his
upcoming performance. This enticing
premise makes for some sweet moments
and surprises as Andrew and Sara try to be
good roommates despite the burgeoning
attraction between them (which is complicated by Saras initial belief that
Andrew is gay). Some of Saras musings
about her past are overly dramatic in the
beginning, but her responses become
more natural as the story progresses.
Valentin efficiently incorporates backstory by interweaving past protagonists
into a subplot centered on a wedding. The
plot is contrived at times, but the alternating perspectives of Sara and Andrew
keep it moving quickly. Occasional awkward sentences detract slightly from the
flow.

The Nutcracker King:

(Coming from Darkness #1)
Eustacia Tan. Eustacia Tan, 99 e-book
(115p) ASIN B018VK9132

Tan inexplicably morphs the joyful

Nutcracker story into a gruesome, horrific
rampage of a psychopathic prince turned
doll who murders
his family members and bathes in
their blood, all for
the sake of his
quest to become
human again and
win the hand of
his dear Marie.
This unsettling
alteration of the
original story eschews the happy ending
and takes place eight years later, with the
love story between the Nutcracker and
Marie unresolved. The plot of this sexist
novella involves a kidnapping, forced
marriage, torture, and a ditzy heroine
who makes excuses for the evil the
Nutcracker does in her name. The brutality rivals the original Grimm fairy tales
and is certainly not appropriate for children. Tan mixes third-person and firstperson points of view to the detriment of
the narrative flow, abuses clichs, mis-

places colloquialisms, and includes anachronisms that would have baffled E.T.A.
Hoffmann. Those hoping for a Pride and
Prejudice and Zombiesstyle bit of whimsy
will be very disappointed.

Siege of Praetar:

paper (166p) ISBN 978-1-5031-2808-8

This highly engaging debut takes place

on the dying planet of Praetar, where the
relentless sands and the dim light of its
looming red giant sun force a slow exodus
by those with the means. But the
Praetarians dont know that their flights
off the planet are doomed to fail. Hyken,
one of many pilots who serve the posthuman Empire, follows instructions to
destroy freighters leaving the surface,
assuming theyre transporting weapons or
are otherwise a threat. Hidebound Hyken
is shocked to learn
that his junior
officer is letting
ships sneak past.
Down on the
planet, Mira is
desperate to save
her two young
girls from a future
of perpetual sickness and starvation. The local
gangster, Bruno, threatens to flex his
power by denying them access to the next
ship. Kristoph skillfully connects three
independent perspectives to demonstrate
how an individual choice, whether selfserving or for the greater good, can create
a ripple of consequences in unexpected
ways.

Sour Candy
Kealan Patrick Burke. Elderlemon, $2.99
e-book (66p) ASIN B017QCGW24

Horror author Burke (Kin) delivers an

excellent terror-filled novella. Philip
Pendleton is an unexceptional man, living
a carefree life with his young son, Adam.
No one who observes them has any idea
that Philip has only known Adam for a
short time, and this carefree life is really a
living hell: after the two randomly meet
at a store, Adam decides to make Philip
his newest parent, using his terrible

powers to completely rewrite

Philips life so that everyone
else thinks hes always been
there. Only Philip remembers the life he
used to have, and those memories are no
comfort as he
becomes a prisoner in his own
home, a slave to a
demonic child.
Bringing the evilchild trope to its
devastating apex,
Burke creates a
horrific vision of
what might
happen if children utterly controlled their
parents. Burkes writing is visceral;
Philips descent into madness is rendered
in unnerving terms. Adding in a
Lovecraftian pantheon of monsters, Burke
creates a stomach-twisting ride through
the depths of horror, breathing new life
into an often-stagnant part of the genre.

Kahle relies
heavily on clichs

Perhaps the most jarring aspect of the

worked as PIs in
their town for 13
years, with hundreds of successful

Satordis meeting

stash of stolen loot shed taken from her
father. After getting Haulmiers assurance that he wont harm Ambrielle,
Satordi accepts the assignment. The
inquiry becomes more complicated when
an old missing-person case gets renewed
attention. Press coverage of Orisia

hippie, striking a chord among likeminded aging boomer readers as he successfully captures the extraordinary
times that transformed both America
and Greenfield, as well as how he shared
in the adventure and risk-taking of an era
that sought great change. His journey
from semi-rural Danville, Ill., to college
at Stanford and life in San Francisco in
1968 began a lifelong procession down
the path less traveled at every opportunity. He participates in the antiwar
movement, lives in one of Stanfords first
communal houses, attends Grateful Dead
concerts, experiments with LSD, and
moves to a commune in New Mexico,
where he dances in the Sufi fashion with
the legendary
Baba Ram Dass.
He then spends
time in Jerusalem
and Alaska before
beginning a career
in law in Santa Fe
and Albuquerque,
where he fought

Greenfields charmed life is bolstered by
both his good sense of humor (My vision

his belief that an evolution of consciousness can end the separation of each from
the other. Looking back, he believes that
the 1960s have at least given us the hope

Extraordinary Experiences:
What Great Retail and Restaurant
Brands Do
Denise Lee Yohn. Denise Lee Yohn, $2.99
e-book (81p) ISBN 978-0-692-54218-7

Yohn (What Good Brands Do), an expert

on branding, passionately and convincingly argues thatcontrary to media
reportsbranding is not dead. Instead,
she asserts, it has evolved to stand for
much more than mere image. She states
that while most companies think of their
brand as a fixed word, phrase, or image,
organizations with great brands use them
as tools to direct each and every step they
make. To show how this is done effectively, Yohn includes fascinating case
studies from the restaurant and retail

industries, which, she writes, enjoy a

uniquely direct relationship with their
customers. She is quick to stress, however,
that the books lessons are accessible and
applicable to any industry or organization. She highlights Popeyes
Louisiana
Kitchen, which
fought back
against declining
sales by working
closely with franchise owners;
Pirch, a small
home fixture
retailer chain that focuses on customer
experience; and Buffalo Wild Wings,
which defied the downward trend for the
casual dining industry. These examples
demonstrate that brand value increases
through a companys actions. Engaging
and informative, this succinct book sheds
important insight on the operational
value of a companys brand and shows how
it can take an organization from good to
great.

Grace Period:

My Ordination to the Ordinary

Melinda Worth Popham. iUniverse, $29.95

hardcover (254p) ISBN 978-1-4917-7602-5

In this impeccably written memoir,

Popham (Skywater) recounts a spiritual
journey launched by the dissolution of her
unhappy marriage and her teenage daughters descent into an intractable depression. Set in the late 1990s, the story
moves from Los Angeles to Yale Divinity
School and back again as the author allows
herself a grace
period in which to
rebuild her sense
of self, after
having my interior taken down to
the bare studs by
the events of the
past five years.
She describes at a
leisurely pace,
with meticulous detail, what she learns
from mundane miracles and minor accidents, those spiritual fender benders that
are collisions with grace itself. The
struggles of a turtle to get through a fence

and cross the road serve as a

metaphor for her own struggles to reach God. She is
humble and honest about her shortcomings, as when she erupts with anger and
foul language at unsuspecting passers-by
when she and her dog get lost, and about
achievements as well. When she concludes that her vocation is ordination to
my plain old ordinary sacred self, she
proves herself a highbrow, refined, spiritual sister to Anne Lamott.

across America who regularly cross-dress
in fishnet stockings and lingerie to reprise
the outrageous antics of its characters at

Photographer Everett (Old Days) captures

in periodically adopting the personas of
Transylvanian transvestite mad scientist
Dr. Frank-N-Furter; his edgy associates,
Riff Raff and Magenta; and Brad and
Janet, the hitherto prim couple indoctrinated into the hedonistic sexuality of his
time-warped pleasure palace. The photo

their performances with

New Hampshire, 1916
Janice S.C. Petrie. Seatales, $7.99 e-book
(154p) ISBN 978-0-9705510-0-9

Childrens book author Petries crisp,

quick-moving true crime account details
the gruesome 1916 murder of Florence
Arlene Small at the house she shared with
her abusive husband, Frederick Small, in
Carroll County, N.H. The victims body

was found shot, bludgeoned, and strangled in shallow basement water after a fire
burned down the primary structure of the
Smalls Ossipee
Lake cottage.
Petrie starts the
book in 1955
with her own link
to the case (as a
child she spent a
night in the
restored cottage
where the murder
took place), then
goes back to Florences last day of life. She
also examines the court record to provide
a diligent account of the trial to convict
Frederick for premeditated murder.
Evidence against Frederick mounted: his
manipulative past; the inventory of what
he took with him to Boston after the
murder, including a traveling satchel with
the house deed; pieces of a timed incendiary device; proof of a recent purchase of
kerosene; and a new life insurance policy
on Florence. Petrie (Somethings Tugging on
My Claw!) expertly puts details into historical context and annotates each chapter
with newspaper and court documentation. Written in 2000 but even more
intriguing as the 100th anniversary of the
crime approaches, this thorough account
will appeal to fans of true crime, especially
those familiar with New England.

memoir. The
Bennett family,
