Statement of Standard Seven- Planning for Instruction
The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by
drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as
well as knowledge of learners and the community context.
Name of Artifact: Lesson Plan
Date of Artifact: Spring 2016
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
The artifact assigned was to create a lesson plan. The lesson plan that I created had to do
with figurative language. I created a plan that will teach students how to identify personification
and onomatopoeia. However, instead of just a PowerPoint and lecture or reading a story with the
figurative language in it, I decided that the students would have more fun with learning about
figurative language in popular songs. My lesson plans correlates well with Essential Knowledge
7.1, The teacher understands content and content standards and how these are organized in
curriculum. The reason my lesson plan correlates with this professional standard is because I
had to make sure that I was familiar with the types of figurative language that I would be
teaching and I had to make sure that it worked well with the Common Core State Standards.
Creating this artifact helped me to realize how much time and effort it really takes to
come up with lessons. Not only did I have to come up with a fun way to introduce
personification and onomatopoeia, but I also had to create and in class worksheet and a
homework worksheet for the students to know whether or not they understood what was being
taught to them. The thing that I thought would take the most time, finding the standard that my

lesson corresponds to, actually took the least amount of time. The Common Core website was
surprisingly easy to navigate and it was simple to find the exact standard that I needed. In all
honesty, I never felt more like a teacher than I did while creating this lesson, worksheets and
presentation included. What made me really feel like a teacher while creating this artifact was the
fact that I would actually be teaching this lesson to a sixth grade class. Knowing this, I felt more
inclined to give it my all and make the best lesson that I could.
I will absolutely use this assignment in my future classroom. After presenting this lesson
not only to my field experience class but also to two sixth grade English classes, I am confident
that this lesson was effective. Not only was praise received from my peers, but the sixth graders
that I taught told me multiple times that I was a good teacher and that they really understood the
concept of personification and onomatopoeia. They enjoyed learning about the figurative
language through song, which is a great thing to know for future lesson plans. After hearing the
praises from my peers and my students, I am excited to be able to use this lesson in my future
classroom.
