Artifact Rational: Universally Designed Lesson Plan
Through the process of developing the a Universally Designed
Lesson Plan, I was able to develop a lesson plan using the Universal
Design for Learning (UDL) framework to support ALL learners, including
those with disabilities, English Language Learners, and students
identified as Gifted and Talented. This plan also allowed me to
demonstrate competence in the selection of appropriate assistive
technology tools based on individual needs. The UDL related to the
Council for Exceptional Childrens (CEC) standards 1,3, and 5
CEC standard 1: Learner Development and Individual Differences
requires special education professionals to understand how
exceptionalities may interact with development and learning and
use this knowledge to provide meaningful and challenging learning
experiences for individuals with exceptionalities. This standard is
met by delivering the instruction both verbally and visually. By
encouraging students to use a variety of mediums (graphic organizer,
internet, articles, videos) to not only research but also create. By
letting students express their creativity in a multitude of forms,
students are more likely to not only grasp the concepts but also retain
and regurgitate them.
CEC standard 3: Curriculum Content Knowledge was met by
my background understanding of fine arts, specifically the central

concepts of proportions, structures of the discipline, and tools needed

for the mastery of self-portraiture Curricular content knowledge is
displayed through the guided Popplet graphic organizer and a
complete, interactive teacher demo, using programs, which range from
Low-High Tech.
CEC standard 5: Instructional Planning and Strategies. This
standard asks that special educators select, adapt, and use a
repertoire of evidence-based instructional strategies to advance
learning of individuals with exceptionalities. The teacher demo and
student completion of the Popplet graphic organizer outline an
effective planning strategy for students to successfully create an
original Digital Manipulation emulating the process and style of the
chosen artist.
In developing the Universally Designed Lesson Plan, I was able to
expand my understanding of Special Education, specifically, the lesson
planning process. After teaching for a decade, I found the vast majority
of my lessons were not up to date. The knowledge I gained through the
UDL process, gave me the tools to create new and meaningful lessons,
polish my existing plans and meet the needs of my students. In the
future, I plan to use the UDL template for all my lessons.
