Professor Canavan
ENGL 1010
27 January 2016

Pre-Writing Reflection:
On average, I will usually send out 3-4 emails per week. I have a lot of friends who are currently
on church missions and I like to personally get a response back from them, aside from what they
send in their group emails. I also send my professors emails if I dont think Ill be in class or
am concerned about an assignment question. The people I tend to communicate with over email
are my friends and professors. Other ways I may communicate are by text, Canvas discussions,
snapchat, Instagram, Group Me (an app where all your friends can be in one group and you can
like one anothers comments), and Facebook messenger. Personally, I believe the most important
part of the email is making sure you get your points across and get feedback in return if thats
what youre looking for. Depending on who Im sending the emails to itll be shorter/longer
taking anywhere from 5-15 minutes.

Subject: Thank you
Dear Ashlin,
Im without words over the birthday present you gifted me. I couldnt be more thankful
about the time you spent on creating each individual dot into a self-portrait of myself, youre an
incredible friend! Ive hung up the painting in my living room and cant help but be amazed each
time I look. Youll definitely have to give me a few tips and lessons in the upcoming months.
How have you been doing over the summer break? How do you like your new job
working as a Medical Engineer? How was your volunteer experience at the Ronald McDonald
house been? (Ive heard the kids are adorable!) Ive missed seeing you every other day and hope
everything is well back at home. Well need to catch up over lunch sometime soon, my treat.
Dont hesitate to send me a text or give me a call at any time.
With love,
Ju

Subject: Accounting Internship
Dear Mr. Wilson,
I received a referral from Mr. Lee Martinez about an Accounting Internship opportunity
you are currently offering. I am currently a Freshman at Salt Lake Community College working
towards an Associate Degree in Business. While I have minimal background experience in the
field of accounting, I believe getting an opportunity like this could be very fundamental for my
future.
I learned about your company through personal research online and genuinely appreciate
your company slogan of The department where EVERYBODY counts! I hope to work for a
firm with strong core values like yours and believe I can be of help.
I have gone ahead and attached my cover letter, resume and references. I would like the
opportunity to meet with you and discuss this internship opportunity over an interview. Please let
me know if you have any other questions by phone: (801) 555-555 or by email:
JulianaIvanova10@gmail.com.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Juliana Ivanova

Subject: Advanced Placement Concern
Dear Online Advisor,
My name is Juliana Ivanova. I've signed up to meet with an advisor this upcoming week
to go over a few questions but I was wondering if you could answer a simple one I have. I took a
look at my Degree Works on my MyPage and noticed that my Advanced Placement Calculus
score got me out of Math 1210, but not out of Math 1050 or Math 1090.
I don't need Math 1210 as a requirement for my degree and I was curious as to why it
didn't satisfy my QL section. Would I still need to go back and take either Math 1050 or Math
1090 in order to complete that section?

Any information that I receive would truly be helpful as Im having a difficult job
understanding this concept as a whole. Thanks in advance for your willingness to help.
Sincerely,
Juliana Ivanova

Post-Writing Reflection:
Lately, Ive been sending out 8-9 emails looking for internships, jobs in my specified
field, emailing professors and continuing more of my missionary emails. I input my information
and attach resumes, cover letters or references to the employers; weekly updates to friends and
concerns about projects to my professors. I send emails to friends, employers and professors. I
still communicate the same way as before. Ive been very into snapchat and GroupMe over the
last couple of weeks and those are my top used communication Apps. Depending on the type of
email Im sending out Ill spend more time on it. If its a formal email Ill take my time and
spend around 20 minutes making sure everything looks neat, otherwise itll take me 10
maximum to write up an email.
The most important thing is the context within the email as well as the format. The first
thing I noticed once I completed writing each of the emails was how informally the personal
emails to my friends were. For example, if Im responding back and forth to missionaries, Im
not going to change the subject line each time. I like being able to respond back to the previous
message and having all of my messages to that person be under one link. I dont follow email
format very well, but I want to be able to rant over email and give a good update on how Im
doing, even if that requires 250+ words. The last thing I saw was I do a terrible job on closing up
personal emails with my name. Ive realized it isnt important if my friends know who is writing
to them, its just bad etiquette to not follow the format.
