Genre Analysis

The topic of this genre analysis is veterans and PTSD. A diagram A Veterans Worst
Wounds may be the ones you cant see by the American Psychiatric Association and the column
Vets Suffering from PTSD need our help are the genres. Veteran trauma of PTSD is not full
understood by the court system. The column expanded on the fact that PTSD is a mental illness
that still needs to be understood. According to the American psychiatric association, the majority
of veterans have to deal with traumatic brain injuries with the possibilities of it ending in
suicide/suicidal thoughts.
In both genres the main focus is to raise awareness about veterans and them dealing with
PTSD.Since both genres were meant to raise awareness, it is obvious that there is a deeper
meaning being expressed to the audience. In the column and diagram the messages are presented
clearly and open to the general public. The columns purpose is to the give a real life
consequence of how PTSD affects veterans and how the average person would not understand
the full affects of the condition therefore informing the reader. Whereas the diagram gives short
and simple facts about brain trauma and how it can cause PTSD and suicide also informing the
reader in a more direct way. These topics might interest the audience because PTSD could affect
someone close to them and they would want to know more about it. Formal language is used in
the column because it is the appropriate use for the audience and purpose. The language in the

diagram is somewhat informal because it uses quick facts but its appropriate because it just a
diagram. The significant similarities between the two genres is that they speak on the same topic.
The major difference is that the diagram is just factual evidence based on statistics, whereas the
column expands on the facts by stating how it affects the lives of the veterans.
The diagram being supported by the American Psychiatric Association gives the
information credibility. Column has ethos because it has important army and health science
figures from the government to verify it. Pathos is not very prevalent within the diagram because
is purely facts, however the reader can derive emotion form the facts such as how suicide makes
them feel. Within the column pathos is emphasized in the picture that is shown on the first page,
allowing the reader to visualize someone who is affected by PTSD. Logos is highly recognizable
in the diagram because of how it set up. The brain is the central focus with all the statistics
surrounding it. The font for the heading grabs the attention of the reader. Logos in the column is
made clear with the facts representing the number of veterans on death row.
Both genres were effective in conveying the message. The diagram was direct and simple
with the general statistics. The column was effective in giving the audience an issue that comes
with PTSD.
