Presentation

I will begin the lesson by reading the book Stroll and Walk,
Babble and Talk: More about Synonyms to the students. I will
have a group discussion about what they think makes word pairs
like stroll/walk, babble/talk, and others from the book, synonyms.
We will make a formal definition of synonyms together and write
it on the board.
Then I will have the students go to their individual desks and I
will pass out the synonym rolls work sheet. They will fill out
synonym pairs from the book on their worksheet, or come up wit
their own.

Then again in small groups, the group will fill out the other
worksheet together! I will have a list of words on the board as
options, or they may choose their own.
After that is done, the students will choose one word and will
have to have at least 4 synonyms for that word. They may use
resources such as a thesaurus or dictionary. Once they have
decided their words, they will cut out synonym rolls from the
tan paper and write their synonyms around the swirly in the
middle
At the end each student will have the opportunity to share their
synonym roll and tape it to the board to display.

Practice/Application
I will predetermine groups and I will be careful to pair stronger
ESL speakers with the lower level ESL speakers.
Large group discussion along with smaller group discussion
will ensure that all students are actively participating as well
as speaking/listening.
While students are in small groups and working individually, I
will be walking around the room and helping them as need be
This will also not be the students first time using resources
such as a thesaurus and dictionary, but I will be available to
help them when needed.
Review/Assessment
I will be doing a formative while the students are working during
class time.
I will also be collecting their synonym rolls to ensure that each
student had proper synonyms on their paper
