Research, Observations, and Analysis
Conclusion

Overview:
Social policy research requires informed research to address the
inequalities within our society. To do so, the aggregation of data
is made possible by subject matter experts, usually sociologists,
anthropologists, and or public health specialists with advanced
degrees. However, the collaboration among such individuals,
and the cross-pollination among various departments and
sectors that they are employed in, is seldom visited. The wealth
of knowledge that these individuals contribute to our society is
necessary as their particular skill set provide a keen awareness
of an array of social issues. The delivery of services and
products through private organizations cannot effectively reach
their target audience or consumers without this informed
research. In addition, without research, initiates would never be
funded, grants would lack inspiration, and policies to address the
pertinent social needs would have never been implemented.
Social Media Strategy/Brand Distribution:
Considering this is a social media project, I am utilizing Instagram as
the social media outlet to promote collaboration among various
industries and sectors that are affiliated with some form of social policy
research.
Instagram:

The call for solidarity among social policy research professionals to


collaborate and share their thoughts for moving forward over
Instagram with #PublicHealthTogether #BetterTogether will connect
these individuals for professional collaboration. This way, followers will
be able to see all posts affiliated with the hash tag instead of having to
follow and follow back various accounts to see posts.
Process & Rationale:
Many interdepartmental and community development initiates are
inspired from social media. While working at the Rhode Island
Department of Health, I worked on a new initiative called the
Community Health Resilience Project to help Rhode Island citizens
become prepared for an emergency as well as be able to engage in
community resilience through social cohesion. As an intern, I assessed
other online programs such as the Sanfransisco Department of
Emergency Preparedness where their social media platform SF72
embraced many social media outlets, logos, and other videos to spread
awareness of the importance in helping neighbors, planning evacuation
routes, and having a place of refuge in times of environmental despair.
Targeting both the private and public sector can help organizations
become more sustainable and build a better brand while the public
sector is able to reach further individuals with additional funding and
institutional support. I plan to preform an online meta-analysis in
which I will assess the pre-existing Instagram accounts and hash tags
being utilized to spread awareness of public health and social policy
issues to then create additional hash tags to suggest to these
organizations to utilize for further cross-departmental pollination nation
wide.
Social Media Audience:
I currently follow Rhode Island Department of Health, Rhode Island
Department of Emergency Management, Boston University Public
Health, and other private institutions such as National Grid, GE, and
Schneider Electric. By targeting both the public and private sector,
partnerships for grants, publishing, data dissemination, and conference
planning can be utilized to further inform the public of their
environment but also policies to ensure their safety.
Conclusion Observations/Analysis:
Through this project, it became apparent to me how much effort is
needed to unify opposing sectors for optimal sustainability, community
resilience, and health equity. The Rhode Island Department of Health
strives to ensure that every individual, regardless of their social
locators, are ensured health equity while businesses strive to ensure
environmental equity with corporate social responsibility, risk
assessment, and precautionary principles.
