The Transcontinental Plan

Jenny Phillips

ID# 10

8th Grade American History Class

Undesirable Behavior Targeted: Off Task Behavior
Talking to another student(s) during class, working on schoolwork for a different class, working on classwork at an
inappropriate time, sleeping in class, using electronic devices, drawing, or reading a book for pleasure.
Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted: On Task Behavior
Contributing to classroom discussions by providing a comment, asking or answering questions related to topic the
class is discussing, and working on assigned work at specified time. Keep all electronic devices put away unless
the teacher authorizes the use of electronic devices for a specific class related purpose.
Types of positive reinforcements 1. Immediate R+ Students will be given a small paper train ticket whenever observed participating in class
discussion by providing an appropriate comment, question or answer if all other work and electronic devices
are put away. Students may also earn a ticket when observed working on assigned work during the allocated
time and have all electronic devices put away unless authorized use for the assignment has been given.
2. Ongoing R+ Students will submit responsibility to turn in their tickets to the class jar at the end of the class
period. For every 25 tickets turned in the class earns 100 feet or 1 inch of railroad and telegraph line on their
transcontinental railroad map. For every 100 feet earned the students will learn something new about how the
rail roads and telegraph were connected and how each invention drastically changed life in America.
3. Overall R+ - Once the students have completed 1,700 miles of rail and telegraph line the class will build and test
their own simple telegraph machine in small groups of 4-5 students. Students will use Morris code to try to
send and decode messages using their telegraph.
4. Students will be handed tickets when observed doing on task behavior. The students will turn in their tickets to
their class jar at the end of the class. The teacher will count the tickets each day and make note on the bottom
of the map. Each time 25 tickets are turned in the teacher will draw an inch of the rail and telegraph lines on
the map and providing the class with a mini lesson. When the transcontinental rail road is complete the
students will earn their telegraph activity.
Interactive Learning Activity: The teacher will have all the supplies needed to complete the activity and instructions
ready for when the students meet their goal. The activity will place the following class period after the goal is
met. The plan and activity meet the 8th grade social studies science, technology and society TEKS #27: The
student understands the impact of science and technology on the economic development of the United States
&28: The student understands the impact of scientific discoveries and technological innovations on daily life in
the United States & social studies skills #29 (c): organize and interpret information from maps.
Necessary Materials: 2 Pieces of wood; 9 Small wood screws or nails; 2 Large IRON nails; 4 Flat strips of metal. 3- about
4 inches long, 1- about 7 inches long and MUST be iron-bearing; 20 ft or more of INSULATED solid wire; 2 Flashlight
batteries.

Teaching the Desired Behaviors: To teach the desired behaviors I will demonstrate on task behavior and model
how a comment or question can further the discussion. I will ask that the students practice on task behaviors
several times and to explain what constitutes on task behavior. As a class we will review and practice on task
behaviors at the beginning of each class for a week after the plan has begun.
Teaching the Plan: After discussing the plan with the students I will show them the tickets and I will demonstrate
how I will distribute the tickets as on task behaviors are observed. I will model for the students what to do with the
tickets and how at the end of the day the tickets will be tallied at the bottom of the map allowing them to earn the
100 feet or inch of rail and telegraph lines. I will show the students the homemade telegraph and explain the
activity that they will be working toward.
Provide options: Each class will have a large poster labeled by class period on an easel. At each class period the
previous class poster will be placed in the back revealing the next class chart. Also each class will have its own
cup labeled with the class period on it for the tickets to be easily placed inside at the end of the class each day. This
Behavior plan can be altered to address different undesirable behaviors and promote other expected behaviors such
as being prepared and on time to class.
