VINTAGE CHARM
Om Swastiastu...

Despite so many new and upcoming places that attract tourists to the island, the old
brands, buildings and destinations are still doing their best to keep up with the current trends.
They may have undergone renovation, revitalization or expansion, but they are not left
behind as they are very well preserved. In fact, many of them are still high on the list of Balis
places to visit and hard to beat by the new ones.
It has been more than 20 years since the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay rst
established itself as one of the rst luxurious villa resorts in the world, yet still gives surprises.

Sudamala Suites & Villas Sanur

Earlier this year the resort launched newly revamped villas that blend Balinese architecture
with a modern touch nd out more about this gem in Rest & Relaxation. Meanwhile,
Waterbom Bali may have been opened for 15 years already, but their new extreme slides
show that age is just a number. Join our adventure experience the four new slides in Action
& Attraction, and get ready to have a most fun day at the water park!
Our team also took a trip to Singaraja to discover the story of the town as well as its
historical buildings read Lifestyle & Leisure to nd out about our adventure. From outside
of Bali our contributor Edna Tarigan discovers the tea tradition in Jakarta that has its roots
going back centuries ago, which she shares in Capital Corner, while Fadil Aziz in Beyond
Bali takes us on a hunt for Art Deco buildings in Bandung.
These destinations are rich with history and they prove that preservation is one of the main
keys that make Indonesia, particularly Bali, charming in everyones eyes. Lets cherish them
together.

IMAGINE
What if some day our sandy beaches
are lost as large boulders from
breakwater took their place? The beach
we once knew was eroded away by
the changing sea currents caused by
new reclaimed land that disrupted the
water ow. Water will always nd a
new path and no one can stop it.
Nature and non-eco-friendly
development are the main reasons
that cause erosion. In 1995 a huge
development started in Serangan Island
that expanded the 111 hectares of
land into 481 hectares. This new land
eventually forced the sea current to
nd a new way. It now travels across
the southeast area of Bali through Sanur
Beach in Denpasar, to Lebih Beach
in Gianyar, and up to the Klungkung
beach areas.
Sanur has nine kilometers of coastal
area that has now lost much its
beach. In the 1990s, the Indonesian
government, hand in hand with the
government of Japan, revitalized the
beach and made some barriers to
prevent waves from directly impacting
the coast. But the data published by
the Department of Public Works of Bali
in 2011 stated that erosion occurs
along 102.5 kilometers of the 437.7
kilometers of the coastal area of Bali.

ot so many people know that

Jakarta has a unique tea tradition
that all began in the Glodok area.
Located in West Jakarta, Glodok
is the citys China Town, where the

Chinese inuence is very evident in their food, business

and cultural buildings. And the story of the early tea
routine in Jakarta has now become the talk of the town,
since the Pantjoran Tea House began to operate last
December. Located on Jalan Pancoran Raya, right at the
southern gate of the old town, this teahouse is not just a
unique place to unwind in the afternoon but is also rich
with history. Lets discover the story while sipping some
hot tea

the amount of teapots Nyai Gan Djie served on a daily
basis, and teko is the Indonesian for teapot.
Recently, the Jakarta Old Town Revitalization
Corp (JOTRC) hand in hand with local government is
revitalizing Jakartas old town with China Town as their
main focus. One of the buildings that they renovated
was the old pharmacy building named Aphoteek
Chung Hwa, which is less than 500 meters away from
Patekoan. After undergoing renovation for more than
a half year, the old pharmacy has been transformed
into a vintage teahouse with Chinese-style interior and
a wide area on its second oor. That old building has
now become the Pantjoran Tea House, which is much
inuenced by the Gan Djie couple.

their tea products and tradition such as China,

after all, Glodok is the heart of Chinese culture in the

building was the house of Major Khouw Kim An, the
leader of Chinese society from 1910-1916, and is now

ITS RECHARGE TIME!

Recharge Night by Bali & Beyond Magazine is back! For the rst time this year, the party was held at the
grand ballroom of the Ayodya Resort Bali on April 1, 2016. Attended by some 800 people from the travel
and hospitality industry, the party was tremendously fun with a carnival theme that entertained the guests with
fun and challenging games. While mingling, guests also enjoyed fresh cocktails by Balimoon and 9 Vodka,
wine from Sababay, and of course pints of Heineken beer. The photo booth from Moments To Go was also
a big hit, as well as the not-to-be-missed door prizes donated by The One Legian, Grand Nikko Bali, iNi Vie
Hospitality, Love F Hotel, Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana Hotel, Conrad Bali, and the Mandara Spa. This event
was also supported by Arif Denkerdeck, LV C&C Model Management, and Hard Rock 87.8 FM Bali. It was
only last month, but already we cannot wait for the next Recharge Night Party!

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot

more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
